Travelling with bicycle on TPE train

I've never travelled with a bike on a train before, but will be doing so in a couple of weeks time on a journey to the Lake District by Transpennine Express. Looking at the seating plan for the train I'll be travelling on (apparently a Nova 2), the bike spaces are in coach A.

Maybe a stupid question, but do I just leave my bike in that area of the train and go and sit elsewhere (there are no reservations for this journey), or do I have to stay in that exact section of the coach with my bike? (there only appear to be fold-down seats there).

The bike area in the Class 397 'Nova 2's has fold down seats, you can leave the bike there and take a seat in the normal area, or you can remain by your bike in the fold down seats (unless the area is full)

Have you reserved a bike space? It's not mandatory but is encouraged.

You should be able to get a reservation, if you weren't given one when booking then that's odd, you can make a reservation on the GWR website.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I've reserved a space for the outward journey. Do I need to attach/lock my bike to anything to make sure it doesn't move about or block the fold down seats? If the train isn't busy, I'll most probably just sit in the normal area of the coach.

There is a strap to secure your bike in place against the fold down seats. The seats are only available when there's no bikes in the space.

There's room for 4 bikes on the 397 "Nova 2".
