Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to Cornwall in the Autumn with my partner. We have a complication that we are waiting for a date for her to (possibly) have minor surgery. If the date turns out to be in the middle of the holiday, we may have to cancel the holiday last-minute if the surgery cannot be re-scheduled.

So, I am hoping to find an insurance provider that will insure against this, for the train tickets (especially the sleeper) and hotels. Because it's a pre-existing condition and we know that the surgery is likely, I'm not too hopeful. But I thought I would ask for recommendations - might be easier than delving through the policies of loads of providers looking for the one that fits.

Hope someone can help, even if it's just to say "you haven't got a chance".

I think you're going to struggle to insure something with such a high chance of happening...

Can you replan to avoid the sleeper (so use a super off peak return) and book refundable hotels? Probably cheaper than any such insurance.

Yeah honestly I'd basically come to the same conclusion before posting...

Refundable hotels would be sensible yeah.

I specifically want experience the sleeper (in one direction), so using off-peaks not ideal. I'm actually a bit confused as to what the refund options are for the Night Riviera. The GWR web page says you can refund the supplement:

Time of cancellationRefund available
Up to 14 days BEFORE the date of arrival100% of the supplement, minus a £10 admin charge per ticket.
Up to 7 days BEFORE the date of arrival75% of the supplement, minus a £10 admin charge per ticket.
6 days or less BEFORE the date of arrivalNo refund

But does that mean you can't refund the actual ticket? Or merely that you have to do that separately?

The ticket is a Super Off Peak Single/Return and has the usual refund conditions i.e. minus £5 admin fee. Or you could buy it from a retailer that charges no fee.
