Do they have plans to ever bring these back? I just booked tickets from London to Machynlleth and for a journey of such length it really would be good to book seats.

Board at Birmingham International for such a journey and take your pick at your leisure. That's what I do when I do (roughly) that journey. Remember it reverses at Shrewsbury so depending on which bit you prefer scenery wise you might want to start off going backwards.

In answer to the actual question I suspect there is no chance of that until the Mk4s get more reliable and the 197s have displaced all 158s.
