I went in and out to Edinburgh two days in a row on the train getting a return each day. When I was at the station to come back the second day I was drunk, walked through the barrier that was manned. Staff asked for my ticket, so fumbled about - found my ticket & showed him, he said it was for the wrong day (must have took the wrong one out) he kept it and said I'd need to buy another ticket onboard - last train was about to leave which is why I imagine he let me go & equally I didn't have time to hang about to find the right one, so said I would. I then got on the train & did manage to find the right ticket for the conductor. So all good, except I'm now thinking the first guy didn't know it all worked out and I DID have a correct ticket, so could he try and report me or anything? put my photo on a watch list etc...? he never took my details or anything and as I say did let me go to get on the train, so I'm hoping that means not? As I got back okay I never kept the actual ticket, but am now thinking I should have just in case?

I doubt anything will ever come of this.

Even if you had bought a ticket they would have no way of knowing - especially if you'd used cash. Nothing to worry about.

Was your journey wholly within Scotland? If so nothing is likely to come of this unless the police are involved as private prosecutions are extremely rare there.

Yes wholly in Scotland. When you say unless the police are involved do you mean unless they were involved at the time or get involved retrospectively? As police weren't involved at all, no one took any details and I just got told to buy a ticket (although didn't have to as I found my other one).

They mean in a hypothetical sense at the time.

You are 100% in the clear. If the barrier staff had an issue they wouldn’t have let you through. There’s no case where they let you pass but then report you afterwards.

Thanks all, good to know - as you can probably tell I get pretty paranoid about all this stuff, I rarely take the train & drink even more rarely so often get the next day 'fear' about everything that happened the day before.

Nothing is likely to come of this. Under Scots law it is not possible for them to issue you a penalty fare and it is effectively impossible for them to prosecute you. Even if they had taken your details, which it sounds as though they did not.
