A one-off Class 14 Spectacular!

Following on from the iconic event held in 2014 at the East Lancashire Railway to celebrate 50 years since the class were introduced, the EVR is planning to celebrate the class reaching their diamond jubilee. It is planned for the weekend to feature several members of the class operating together to especially include locomotives which were not operational at the time of the 2014 event. It is also planned to be a ‘swan-song’ for D9537 which is due to be withdrawn at the end of the event for overhaul works to commence.

Expected to feature:
Class 14 D9537 "Eric"
Class 14 D9523 based at the Wensleydale Railway
Class 14 D9551 based at the Severn Valley Railway
Class 14 D9504 based at the Kent & East Sussex Railway
Class 14 D9553 based at the Calendonian Railway
Class 14 D9529 based at the Nene Valley Railway
Static display: D9525

Am I correct in thinking only the Saturday will have all locos on one train?

If so, any double headers on Thursday/Friday?

Thanks

More or less same question : Friday is the only real practical all day for me - will they all be used all days ? It would tip the balance on planning if I knew this gen.

I was at the ELR 9500s in 2014 - they were all used on the Friday there as well as weekend (exlcuding the failure of course)

We are in the process of finalising the timetables. As soon as they're agreed, I'll post them here for you.

Thank you hexagon
Just to add - if you have a library card and your library subscribes to the Libby digital library service, you can read a number of magazines for free through the Libby app. Heritage Railway is an included title.

Yes I do use this actually, and I see Railways Illustrated is included. Thanks for the tip off

I can recommend the full english breakfast served on those early morning trains which use Set 1 on the first three days of the gala. Excellent value at £10-00, no need to pre- book a meal.

For those arriving slightly later in the day, there will be a beer tent on the platform at Duffield and the Apollo bar coach will be open at Wirksworth.

Our friends up the hill at the Steeple Grange Light Railway are reported to have rostered their ex- Horwich Works 18" gauge Ruston, ZM32 on the Sunday.

Purchased my Rover tickets for the Sunday, must say I am looking forward to it albeit disappointed that I won’t get the chance to get haulage behind “Eric”

Unfortunately due to issues with the contracted hauler, D9553 and D9504 will not arrive in time for Thursday. It is hoped they will arrive for Friday. Updated loco allocations will be on the timetable shortly.

That's a pity. Already booked my trains to get me to Duffield for the Thursday.

I enjoyed my day (Thursday) despite the service being a couple of locos light. The freight service being a particular highlight

9529 has sat down at Duffield and we’re waiting for a rescue loco, or locos, to take its place.

Puts my plans for today up the spout as we’ll miss the Ravenstor connection and potential haulage behind D9523.

Terrible day in the end, complete waste of four hours and not one piece of haulage.

Which feels like a shame really as Thursday to Saturday went really well and quite smoothly considering even when making a few changes on the Friday.

Here is a selection that I took on Friday and Saturday:

Have to say it was a really enjoyable event on the Saturday! Now I am rather keen on some Paxman thrash, so maybe that's not too surprising - but it was a well-run event. Hopefully it was a financial success for the railway.

Anyway, here's "Eric" prior to departure to Duffield for the last run back before being stopped for overhaul. Whilst the run with 6 locos powering was good fun, I actually enjoyed the final run with D9537 more: on load 8 plus a class 47 on the back, it was hugely enjoyable.
