A day return? You must be mad ;)

There are at least two routes you may be able to get cheaper Advance fares on - via London using Avanti and via Sheffied using East Midlands Trains.

Are you eligible for any railcards? Eg senior railcard, aged between 16-30, disabled etc

@Garryefc1985. Welcome to the forum. Are you intending on travelling on Saturday 19th October 2024 for a football match at Portman Road by any chance?

Off Peak Return (route "not via London") is £120.90 or if travelling via London (route ✠ANY PERMITTED) it's £152.70, both before any railcard discount. If you're eligible for a railcard, but don't yet have one, it would undoubtedly pay for itself.

Travelling using advance singles (one each way) is always a possibility, but not so flexible, and there's maybe the chance that the KO time / date could yet be changed from Saturday 3.00 p.m. for live television coverage.

this is what I am holding off on.

Only been to Ipswich once before in 2021 when the restrictions were lifted and we stayed over the road from the ground, but I love going into stadiums I have not been before, tickets aren’t a problem but I fancy an away day on the train as it’s been a few years but st them prices I am struggling to justify it. As you say it doesn’t help with the tv either.
