I'm trying to use the seat selector on the forum's ticketing sites (new and old) for a return journey from Reading to Cardiff Central on 4th of August but whenever I choose seats that appear to face the same direction the site says they face different directions.

Is it to do with the seat icon looking weird, or is it a glitch with the system?

The seat selector is the same between the two sites.

Can you let us know what time it departs so I can look up the actual data from the reservations system?

It's likely a caching issue from our supplier.

You'll be best off checking the GWR seat map in conjunction with the TrainSplit seat selector with the knowledge that seat 01 in every coach is marked as forwards facing in the raw data.

Is there any way I can guess the direction of all the other seats based on the information you've given me as well as know which coaches are at the front vs rear?

Update: I just reserved the seats that the GWR website said were forward facing window seats. Is the GWR site any more reliable when it comes to seating position?

There is no guarantee that the seats will be forward facing - they are just numbered seats, so if the train is in reverse the seats will be too.

Looking at the seat map on GWR's website, like I had suggested. If you know what direction one seat is, you can infer the others.

Just checked, although it seems that on the Trainsplit seat map each coach is going in opposite directions assuming the GWR seat maps all depict the coaches from left to right as opposed to left to right to right to left. Any idea what's going on?

You could just go to the unreserved coach and pick a seat of your choosing - assuming space available. You might prefer to sit on the right side of the train as it is north facing. People on the sunny south side sometimes pull the blinds. I just wish those people who want to look at screens would sit in the non window seats.
