Trivia: Bus operators with Ticketer ticket machines, but no barcode reader

I'll start off with Sullivan Buses.

I've travelled with a considerable number of operators across Hertfordshire and the surrounding counties, and so far I've not come across another operator whose buses are equipped as such.

As far as I’ve noticed the barcode / QR code scanner is inbuilt into the ‘head’ with a camera looking down at the place you locate your mobile or coded ticket…. Do you mean they use Ticketer machines but don’t scan?

To clarify - you correctly describe the typical Ticketer ETM, but on Sullivan Buses their Ticketer ETMs have no 'head' and the NFC reader is completely exposed.

Blands of Rutland have a ticketer machine with no barcode reader I think. They're just a small operation serving Rutland so no app or barcode tickets as far as I'm aware. They don't do £2 single fares either... Imagine my surprise at paying £6.50 recently for a single (R1 service Melton Mowbray to Corby).

So the QR scanner is also known as a hockey stick due to its shape!

There’s a few different versions of Ticketer’s machines - with barcode scanner; without barcode scanner; a compact version in which the screen and card reader/printer are all individual, which is handy for minibuses; and I’m not sure if they still do it or not, but they did an ‘in a box’ version, in which the whole kit and kaboodle was in a convenient carry case.

The Wellglade Group also have a version on which the positions of the printer and card/barcode reader are switched, as their policy is that drivers must hand tickets to passengers.

Yes, that's the one.

Funnily enough all my SB* journeys have been covered by pre-purchased Intalink Explorer tickets (as they were named until a week ago) which the driver inspects and manually logs use of, so I've never used their card readers.

Is the R1 tendered? If so then presume the requirement for QR code reader is not in the contract specification (and fare cap participation or lack of is a council decision)
