Hi all,

I’m looking for a route that avoid Zone 1 (London Bridge) that takes me from Westcombe Park to Sutton London. Can you please advise which station I should travel via? I’m unfamiliar with the train routes.

Thanks all.

Via Charlton, which is a routeing point for Westcombe Park and passes the fares check.

thanks @jfollows but I’m not sure how to search this route? TfL is still giving me London Bridge as a change

Are you using Oyster or a paper train ticket? If you are using Oyster you can travel via Lewisham and Peckham Rye which would avoid zone 1, using either rail via Charlton or DLR via Greenwich to get to Lewisham. I think it is unlikely that you'll be able to plan a route using the TfL planner though.

Avoiding change at London Bridge (and Z1 altogether) adds £8 to the fare (for an adult without any discount, as compared with a EL routing) and takes ~45min longer

Do you hold any discount?

I’m using oyster with my 26-30 railcard. It’s because I saw the cheaper fare here and thought there might be an option not travelling via London Bridge but it’s not showing on any route planner so it might take a lot longer?

The problem is that Charlton Blackheath is closed for major repairs to a tunnel!
The theoretical route would be via Charlton-Lewisham-Peckham Rye-Tulse Hill-Sutton.

Putting in "via Nunhead" should do the trick as only that route goes through it, but ATM you would get sent round via Slade Green and the journey would take an age.

You might find starting your journey at Blackheath works, but you'd have to catch the 108 bus which probably nullifies your savings, and it still takes a fair time.

Oh you’re right! It’s showing the route this way. Thanks for explaining I now start to know how the travel via works. But it’s a shame that it’ll need to add the bus fare so maybe I’ll just go with changing at London Bridge. Thanks a lot!

How do you work that out?
Forum ticketing website set to avoid London Bridge completely

Westcombe Park - London Bridge - Sutton London : £8.1 (£5.30 with a 26-30)

Westcombe Park - Abbey Wood - Whitechapel - West Croydon - Sutton (or any combination of TL/EL/Overground) : £15.90 (£10.40 with a 26-30)

It should still be £2.75 going via London Bridge on Oyster so long as a passenger doesn't touch out and back in there. The higher fare covers the situation where there is a touch out / touch in during the journey at one of the stations listed.

£2.75 is NR Zone 1 to NR Zone 5
£3.95 is LU Zone 1 to NR Zone 5

So, the £2.75 assumes travel via London Bridge but no touch. £3.95 includes the 'mixed-mode' premium. It is a little misleading.

There isn't an 'avoiding zone 1' fare.

The 'default' fare assumes travel via Zone 1, using National Rail services only. There isn't an 'avoiding Zone 1' fare; it's probably seen as unlikely that anyone would take such a slow route.

You will be charged the 'default' fare so long as you aren't transferring between London termini using the Underground. For example you would pay it if you took the quickest route, which typically involves one change at London Bridge. You could also make the journey with one change at Blackfriars, though that is usually slower.

There isn't on Oyster, but there is with paper tickets - a "not via London" return costs £6.40 with a railcard, and £9.60 for "London not Underground". It could work out cheaper if you travel in the peak.

There's information about the travel options for paper tickets while the Chalton-Blackheath link is closed on nre.co.uk:
You can use the following alternative routes at no extra cost:

London Bus routes 89, 54, 380, 202 & SL3.

Docklands Light Railway between Greenwich and Lewisham.

Thameslink services between London Bridge and Dartford via Woolwich.

You could look at a London rail connections map.....
