First Bus has ordered 169 Yutong battery-electric buses from dealership Pelican Bus and Coach. They form part of four successful local authority (LA) bids to the second round of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA 2) scheme in England.

Notably, 127 of them will be the U11DD double-decker, with the remaining 42 being E10 and E12 single-deck models. The total makes First Bus the biggest customer thus far for Yutong products in the UK and narrowly eclipses a 158-unit order recently placed by Stagecoach.

Depots in Basildon, Hengrove (Bristol), Taunton and Weston-super-Mare will receive the buses. Nine more battery-electrics from Wrightbus form part of the ZEBRA 2 work at the depots involved to give a total of 178 buses for First Bus via that initiative, which when combined represents an £89 million investment in vehicles and infrastructure.

When complete, the order will take to in excess of 800 the number of battery-electric with First Bus, and to 14 the number of its depots with supporting infrastructure. It says that some of the latest vehicles will be used on rural and interurban services.

Speaking about the deal with Yutong, First Bus Chief Operating Officer Andrew Jarvis says: “We are delighted to place this order with the team at Pelican. [It] marks another significant milestone as we invest further in our journey towards a zero-emission bus fleet across our UK operations.

“We are excited to be able to bring new state-of-the-art vehicles to our customers, who will see the immediate benefit of these transformative projects, and we look forward to getting these vehicles out in service for customers in the months to come.

“It is an exciting time for our colleagues at all four of these sites as we start to transform and futureproof out depots. This is also great news for our customers, who will see the benefits of these state-of-the-art vehicles – including improved local air quality and the enhanced customer experience that EVs bring.”

First Bus orders 169 Yutong battery electric buses
First Bus already operates Yutong battery-electric single-deckers successfully in three locations in the UK
The Yutong order by First Bus follows successful operation of E10 and E12 single-deckers in Aberdeen, Leeds, and South Wales. First South Yorkshire has trialled a U11DD demonstrator and Head of Yutong UK Ian Downie notes that it “was found to be as reliable and economical as our market leading single-decks” during that work.

Mr Downie adds that the latest vehicles will come with air-conditioning, USB charging points, enhanced passenger information systems, and induction hearing loops. After arrival from China, they will be completed by Pelican at its premises in Castleford, with delivery of all 169 to First Bus scheduled for completion within 16 months of 1 July.

Basildon depot will receive 24 of the U11DD double-deckers and 31 single-deckers; Hengrove will get 67 double-deckers and seven single-deckers; Taunton will take 12 U11DDs and four single-deckers; and Weston-super-Mare will welcome 24 double-deckers.

Considering the composition of First's previous ZEBRA order, this is very surprising to say the least. Yutong are doing very well in the UK at the moment, that's for sure.

I wonder if Wright and ADLs long waiting lists had bearing on the decision to go Yutong

Weston Super Mare seems an odd choice considering the Streetdecks are only a couple of years old.

Indeed, they obviously couldn't find another random start up that has never produced a bus, to place a large order with.

I take it that you realise how enormous Yutong is? - and how their quality and delivery times outdo the likes of Wrights and Alexander Dennis ?

I hope the order has a decent spec of cab door. Not a fan of their fixed screen with the chunky black bar in the middle of the perspex.

Some OpCo will probably be getting youthful cascades. There's a lot of B9s from 2007-9 to be replaced over the next few years.
I wonder whether it might be the older StreetDecks that have been cascaded into Weston that go - perhaps to be converted to electric? After all those earlier examples (35101-201 in particular) do seem to have been the most troublesome, and it does look like First are gearing up for quite a few conversions to EV...

Possibly but there are more new vehicles than there are those older 2015/6 Streetdecks. 5 of Weston's were new to Wells for the 376 - troublesome might be regarded as an understatement!
Colchester being a good example.
I was thinking of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft but yes, Essex too.

Quite surprised by this, i always think "First=Wrightbus".
However, i believe this is good for passengers as the Yutong is an excellent vehicle. Not that the new Wright electrics are bad though.

I notice virtually no orders for the Volvo BZL range as well after they trialled them in South Yorkshire on 51 & X78. The popularity of the Yutong continues & the Double Decker order must be among the first apart from Newport Bus to order these. A bit of a departure after all the recent Wright’s orders.

Plenty of older buses in First Bristol and Bath fleet which could be cascaded around. Many in Bath are ex-Olympic fleets hand me downs from 2012.

Somerset applied for Zebra2 funding.

For those not familiar with Yutong U11DD 11m double deck, linking a Yutong pdf brochure (due to format not easy to quote as text)

I have visions of Switch waving frantically at First, and being ignored...

I know Newport Bus have some but I am not aware of Cardiff having ordered any U11DDs. As for BZLs (and sorry for going O/T here by referncing Salisbury Reds) they have (or have had) a BZL on trial. The article says that the bus will be in Salisbury until Friday 07th June despite seemingly saying that the demonstrator will be around for 2 months. But it seems that BZL will get some benefit from ZEBRA2 as well.

Salisbury Reds said:
Salisbury Reds is offering people living in and visiting the city, a chance to glimpse into the future over the next two months. We'll be welcoming an electric demonstrator bus to Salisbury - in preparation for ordering our brand new fleet of zero emissions vehicles, which are due to arrive in early 2026. The move follows Salisbury Reds’ and Wiltshire Council’s successful bid for funding from the Department of Transport’s latest ZEBRA (Zero Emission Bus Regional Area) scheme. The funding, combined with additional investment from Salisbury Reds and Wiltshire Council, means a total of £11.4m will be used to revolutionise our city network. We will be researching the best electric buses to invest in, so we currently have this demonstrator to monitor and assess. The Volvo BZL has now entered service on our city network - and it will be with us until Friday 7 June.

Anyway back on topic.

Yutong is absolutely massive, their factory "Industrial Park" is like a city, and are supposedly producing at least 500 vehicles a day!

Warrington Transport have 105 on order and TFGM/Stagecoach have 170 on order.

I believe there's delays which again might have influenced where First went with it's next orders Vs Wright etc.

Quality isn't a word I would use with Yutong. Their products grow old rather disgracefully.
Really ?

There's not too many old ones around yet - not enough to make a rational view.
All the ones I've been on have been excellent and far better than any similar ADL or Wright product.

The oldest coaches are now approaching 10 years of age and they suffer from very visible corrosion on outside wheelarches. You don't see this on equivalent vehicles.

Purchase price (new) is £50k cheaper than a Mercedes Tourismo (at £320k) so that assists on sales. It will be interesting to see how the Yutong buses age over time, but if the coaches are anything to go by, they will have a shorter working life.

Plenty of youthful Streetdecks displaced by EVs elsewhere.

And given that First have had a few years' experience of Yutong EVs they must be happy with them.
