What is the point of advance fares?

We’re not going to see a reduction in rail fares.

I think we're more likely to see an increase. I think unless there's a major staffing change at both LNER and the GBR Transition Team, the rollout of the LNER pricing scheme to all InterCity routes is basically inevitable, which will mean significant price rises at traditionally busy leisure times e.g. Friday PM/Sunday PM.

Unfortunately any suggestion of funding public transport instead of private cars results in squealing from the motoring lobby.

Quite a lot now and more later this year as the Nil rate is steadily removed. Another reason why J abandoned EVs and went back to petrol.

Are they "dirt cheap"? No one is denying there are more advances. They are becoming the "standard fare" to most people.

Back in 2014 if I was quick enough I could get a £10 AP ticket for the 06:26 Monday morning Hull Trains service to London from Hull.
Those days have long gone.

What? How is travelling on the wrong train the only way to tell whether someone has travelled? If there are scans at both stations on the ticket, then the individual has presumably travelled. Similarly if they are scanned on board the correct train.

I often travel from Keighley to London via Leeds.

I usually buy the Leeds to London leg separately and then the Keighley to Leeds leg depending on whether I want to do anything in Leeds. They're often bought from different retailers.

Assuming I don't want to spend any time in Leeds, my first ticket is not scanned at Keighley. Sometimes it's scanned on the journey to Leeds. Neither ticket is scanned at Leeds. More often than not my second ticket is scanned on the train, but it's not uncommon for it not to be. About 1 in 4 journeys the gates are open at Kings Cross.

Does the Government really want you to do that? Cars are highly taxed, and then there is the extra revenue generated for local government from parking fees etc.

Tobacco is highly taxed and a major revenue generator for the Government, yet they are trying to get people to kick the habit, by slowly banning.

Petrol is a major tax generator, yet they are trying to push us all towards less taxed electric cars.

LNER style pricing nationwide needs to be highly resisted by all.

It will just see fares becoming even more expensive, whilst no general improvement to the quality of service overall.

Trains will still continue to be late/delayed/cancelled, even with LNER style pricing.

I try to avoid LNER where possible, due to the fares structure, which I consider to be a rip off in many cases.

I used to get a sub-£12 fare every week, 0614 Steeton and Silsden to London (via Leeds) for a couple of years before (presumably) a pricing manager realised they didn't need to offer fares at that level at that time and it jumped to over £40, even buying just as advances went on sale.

Nothing to do with a Pricing Manager they only set the fares. The Revenue Management team monitor quotas
