They've been like that for years, including under SWT.
I'm amazed Porterbrook aren't enforcing the lease terms for asset condition with this and making SWR fix them. They certainly know about it!

TfL three has a review on the 485/4

Generally quite favourable on the seats, especially second class, which they rated higher than first.
I have a soft spot for the 458, living in Feltham for the last 15 years, and the class has had its issues in the past, but nice to see them still going on, despite being written off so many times.

EDIT: Typos
Wow, they've brought second class back, too!

It's going to ramp up to 8 pairs diagrammed over the coming months as more drivers are trained and more units available. I'm not sure when the next diagrams start, not next week.

After less than two weeks, there are already four units in service, usually every day (different units am and pm) from an evebntual fleet of 28 (not all yet converted)
Whereas for class 701, after nearly six months in service, only five units have ever been in service from a fleet of 90.

They don't make them like they used to.........................

I mean, the units have technically been in service for over 20 years now...so not really a valid comparison

A 10 car unit was used on the Hampton Court branch yesterday, I assume that they have been cleared for this line for many years?

They’ve been on regular diagrams that way for over a year now. don’t forget the 10 car 2x455+1x456 was used on this route prior to the withdrawal of the 456s

There are no first class tickets available on the Weybridge via Hounslow line!
Entertaining video.
They talked about how the refurbished 458/4 trains with 2 x 2 seating would have been ideal for the Portsmouth inter city service they were intended for
Now on slow suburban duty, then the video becomes slightly bonkers where an incident means the trains will travel fast from Staines to Waterloo to make up time, and means they can experience the inter city speed, does not reach the full speed, but runs smoothly at an an acceptable 60mph (they had kit to measure this, probably a record for the Hounslow loop).

Probably because of the flower festival?

2S45 and 2S54 cancelled today due to a "problem with the crew" but 2V55 is still shown as running, with 415 and 421 (the same pair as this morning)
(A special 5S54 running as ECS to Waterloo to enter service there)

This is because the agreement with ASLEF is only 1 x 701 unit in passenger traffic per day as a ‘trial’ it’s nothing to do with availability or how the 701s are built.

458/4 reformation and mods. Porterbrook and SWR jointly manage the project. I'm sure the defects highlighted in this forum are noted, but to save time at Widnes are likely put in the CFD category for fixing later on depot. You do not want to lose beat rate on a major project trying to fix the smaller stuff with all the associated abstraction of staff time and obtaining materials. On other similar projects the overhauler has even sent small teams to depots at the conclusion of the heavy work to tackle the minor defects.
I can think of a recent similar project involving Porterbrook where following major overhaul nearly every sidelight (window) had to be replaced on depot afterwards by the chosen overhauler.

Just a gentle reminder that the thread is for the discussion of SWR Class 458s. Other threads exist to discuss other unit classes. ;)

thanks

There shouldn’t be a conversion course, the cabs haven’t changed and neither have any of the traction systems, when the change from 458/0 to 458/5 occured there was no conversion course, simply a reminder that the units could only be run up to 75mph

Probably an insurance policy in case something happens and the driver blames not being trained properly on the reconfigured stock. They also probably drive slightly different with the gear box change

Max speed round the Hounslow loop is 60mph. Goes up to 70mph south of Feltham Jn. Had a few spritely runs round the Hounslow loop in my time when Richmond breaks.

Saw part of set 458512 (at least 74427) a couple of weeks ago at Longport, wondered what these were doing there, still coupled to the barrier vehicle. Are they awaiting further transport to Widnes?

The vehicles at Cockshute sidings are the trailers that have been removed from the sets, and are now awaiting scrapping. They were all delivered by road, a number of them from storage at Long Marston reportedly. The departmental yellow mark 1 isn't a barrier vehicle, it's just another vehicle currently stored there.

There are paths on RTT for a planned transfer from/to Widnes next week. If these transfers run, the delivery from Widnes should be 458426 but it will only have been at Widnes for three weeks by Monday, which is a week less than usual. 458424 was completed in less than four weeks but, perhaps coincidentally, it was the one unit that had to be returned for rectification.

I am not sure what the next delivery to Widnes should be. 458506,510,514 are not out this morning, so it could be one of those three?

Monday 1st July 2024
5Z53 0732 Leicester L.I.P. to Widnes Transport Tech

5Q62 1311 Widnes Transport Tech to Wembley Receptions 1-7

Tuesday 2nd July 2024
5X64 1127 Wembley Receptions 1-7 to Southampton Central

5Q64 1531 Southampton Central to Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D

5Z66 2018 Bournemouth T&R.S.M.D to Eastleigh East Yard
Could anybody confirm which units moved in either direction during these moves please?
