Okay so this might not happen but i notice that 1S39 Birmingham New Street - Glasgow Central ( dep 07:08) has today been cancelled. I am booked on this service next Saturday with tickets purchased off the forum and was wondering is there is a repeat next week would there be any issues with me simply getting the 07:48 to Edinburgh which is also a VT service and returning back south from there later in the day and giving Glasgow a miss altogether?

You would need to purchase a ticket valid for travel between Carlisle (or Lockerbie, if the train calls there) to Edinburgh, but otherwise yes. You would need to connect into the originally booked service coming back.

Alternatively you could re-book to Edinburgh and claim a fee-free refund if you prefer.

Thanks Yorkie, I can get myself to Stafford for a Euston - Glasgow service that departs 15 minutes before the service I'm booked on so if that is cancelled I'll be fine on that one. Thanks again.

I've been directed to ask a question from this thread. https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/which-ticket-for-heathrow-t5.270111/#post-6832351

I don't see 'Heathrow Underground' as a destination or departure option on the split ticket checker, and yet it does appear on the National Rail Enquiries website.

It does appear on one of the other split ticket checkers but gives an error when you actually try and search for availability.

Aligned to this, how do you search for a ticket to a destination in zone 6, which I think comes up as something like 1256?

Thanks

Hmm, yes Heathrow Underground (ZHJ) does not appear to be listed.

If you want a Travelcard (note: this would also be valid on Elizabeth Line), the destination for that is:

London Travelcard Zones 1-6

If you want a Single or Return, valid on London Underground to/from Heathrow (or any other Z6 station), then you want one of the following as the origin or destination, depending on where you are travelling to/from:

London Underground and DLR Zones 1-6
London Underground and DLR Zones 2-6
London Underground and DLR Zones 3-6
London Underground and DLR Zones 4-6

We're pleased to announce that (after a long time in the planning) we now have a whitelabelled version of Trainsplit's new site! This offers a more modern design and we've taken the opportunity to have a rethink about the user experience too, including the long awaited (by some on here particularly!) ability to not necessarily choose the cheapest ticket type for a particular journey where more flexibility is desired.

The new booking engine at tickets-beta.railforums.co.uk will run alongside the existing tickets.railforums.co.uk site for the short to medium term whilst we finish working through improvements for the new interface.

Please do bear in mind the new interface is still a work in progress - and as such any feedback is definitely appreciated; quick bits of feedback can go in this thread but for anything more detailed please email it over to the Customer Support team who'll ensure it gets back through to the technical team working on it.

Finally - any bookings you make on either site help support the running costs for the forum, even if you don't opt to make an additional donation, so thank you for supporting us regardless of whether you use either the older or newer interface moving forward :D

It's a big improvement that it now seems happy to show me about 8 journey options at the same time - with the old site it is often frustrating that it only shows 4(?) meaning a lot of use of the back and forward arrows if you want to get a good overview of the options available over a certain period of time.

Is the "grid" format of outward/return journeys now gone?

Yes - the new site doesn't offer a grid format; as you say once you display more than a few options it would just get unwieldy, plus it allows for a cleaner experience, particularly on tablet/mobile.

I just tried this for a couple of random journeys for tomorrow morning.
Really clear UI.
Where I’m offered a split, what I can’t see before purchase is where the split iss, unless i select change ticket selection. And even then it’s not too clear what I’m about to buy.
Is this intentional?
Then, if I press view ticket information, there appears to be no scroll to move down the page. The only way I could find of closing this is by refreshing the page. Example below.

For info, I’m trying this on Chrome, on iOS.
For further info, I may of course be doing this all wrong!

You can see it if you proceed to the Ticket Information step, just as with the previous iteration of the site.

Your Tickets table

Will get this looked into

Glad to finally get the trainline format that we all know and love of the booking site, much more visually pleasing :)
Minor pedantry: Harwich Town is displayed in full capital letters for some reason. Obviously there's no rush to fix it, just pointing it out.

The grid format is quite useful in various circumstances though - it's a shame it can't continue as an option.

The team are quite happy to hear about these use-cases where you think the multi-column UI doesn't do as good a job compared to the grid, particularly if you can give some examples/screenshots, so that the UI can be improved. If you write in to customer support they'll collate the feedback and ensure it goes to the right people.

Basically much nicer to use, BUT I now have an extra click to delete Use Split Tickets. Maybe that is intentional?
Similarly, to select/deselect "Flexible tickets only" requires two clicks.

How about putting both as buttons on a new line immediately below Single/Return/Open Return? They are surely the most universally used?

On the topic of Settings - for me the cogwheel "settings" icon should lead to stuff I can set up once and then ignore, but here it leads to what I would call "options" - via/avoid and so on. (Or rather, to most of them, because Flexible Only is in Filters which seems arbitrary.)

Folks here on the forum might think they're the most universally used, but as an example: 98.2% of customers do not turn splits off (these numbers computed from a time when it was literally one-click on the homepage). The buttons which are exposed front and centre have been chosen deliberately to avoid an intimidating, cluttered UI.

The cog leads to search settings. The "Flexible only" filter which ignores Advance fares/combinations of fares does not require a new search to be sent to the journey planner, which is why it's a filter and not a search option (it operates on a set of results that have already been retrieved).

So, I went looking for an example of when the grid is useful, which is usually when the options include a mixture of off-peak returns and single-leg priced advances.

For this particular search, here is what each version offers me:

Screenshot 2024-07-16 at 17.28.56.jpgScreenshot 2024-07-16 at 17.29.11.jpg

And I was going to point out how the grid lets me look at that £85.40 super off-peak return that is my best bet if I want to travel out on the 0934, and see what return trains it will let me travel on - or how much extra it would cost to travel out on that one, and return on one that it wasn't valid on.

But I realised the newer system does deal with this (choosing an outward journey and seeing what it does to the return options) in an OK way, by showing additional costs in this manner:

Screenshot 2024-07-16 at 17.39.57.jpg

What I think the grid lets me do, though, that the newer one doesn't, is look at a particular price point for a return leg and then see what my relative choices for the outward leg are, pricewise.

That is useful when you are fairly fixed on the time you want to return, but flexible on the time of your outward journey.

As an additional observation ... I did notice that the grid system offers me that £79.20 lower fare if I return on the 1945-2324 option ...whereas the new system doesn't seem to offer me that.

This is all very complex though, and I'm guessing that the newer system decides that option is too slow to mention. I did have "include overtaken journeys" active though.

Prefer the 'old' version and will stick to using that one.

It took me a while to appreciate the grid - as others have noted the data is easy to scan to quickly identify the main differences. The new format may be easier on the eye, but the info takes much longer to assimilate. I do like progress, but this aspect doesn’t make me a fan….

My first impression, compared to the grid format, is that there is a lot of information and it is difficult to spot the most appropriate ticket, but applying the flexible and fastest filters helps. Personally, I am more likely to use these filters than deselecting TOCs and would prefer the journey filter speed to be listed above the TOC check boxes.

Had I not read earlier posts, I would not have realised that the cog wheel is the equivalent of the "more options" on the current site.

Is there a way of returning to the search results after selecting continue (to see the split points) that retains any applied filters and selected journeys? I've used the browser's back button, but that seems to reset everything.

It would be helpful to understand what value you get from knowing the split points for the search results you are considering. If it's an Advance split, I'm not entirely sure I'd see the relevance.

If the overall question is a "what other itineraries might I be able to take with this combination of tickets?", I could see the value in functionality designed to help answer that question.

The option for other itineraries is certainly something that I like to know - I like to have a plan B in case of disruption due to, for example, "short notice changes in the timetables".

On an advance ticket, a split point close to home (for example Liverpool South Parkway on a ticket to Lime Street, should that split apply), would give me the option to terminate my journey at South Parkway and get the bus home, rather than continuing to Lime Street and getting a bus from Liverpool city centre. Local split points also give me the option of using a Merseytravel Saveaway ticket which would cover the bus to/from the station (for example splitting at Newton le Willows on a Liverpool/Leeds journey).

I'm currently looking at tickets between Liverpool and Birmingham International and for a flexible fare, it turns out that use of a Ranger or Daytripper can give me extra flexibility and/or additional savings. As these tickets are not included in the split ticketing options, it was useful to see the split points.

For example, replacing the Wolverhampton-Birmingham Off-Peak Day Return (£9.20) with an off peak West Midlands Day Tripper (£8.20) gives me a small saving, additional flexibility for alternative types of transport between Birmingham and Wolverhampton in case of disruption, and the option to explore further afield if time allows.

I just want to say that I really like the new layout and massively prefer it to the old one! Sorry for being boring...

I’ve been asked to pass on compliments on the site by a relative I recommended it to. They are very pleased with pretty much all of it, and particularly wanted to mentioned both the amount they’re saving on a commute they do, and the quality of support they received when they had to make a fairly complex journey change.

On the layout of the site they said the grid layout would’ve meant they wouldn’t even try using it when I showed them it, whereas they think the new layout is ‘excellent’.

This seems a bit of a niche issue of little use to those of us outside the big cities, and of rather limited use to those inside.

Can't you just amend the origin or destination to account for that?
