That's very greedy and shows that your poll has been set up for no other reason than to make money to pay your shareholders.

It most certainly is an issue, right now the buses are not run as a public services and the bus companies have freedom to go round making as much money as possible.

The buses have never been run as a public service. The Nationalised bus company was charged with making a profit for the Government. There were still independent and municipal operators as now.

No, the buses existed to provide a public service. It may well be that they made a profit out of this but that is better than profit going to line the pockets of shareholders.

If you were one of the shareholders you wouldn't be complaining would you?

I wouldn't buy shares. It would make me a hypocrite to take part in such an arrangement that I disagree with.

Why do you disagree with people who have donated money to a company getting some kind of return from it?

This is not "Ask Zoë 101 questions" but in short why should you expect money in return for making a donation? If I give a donation to Children in Need I don't expect a dividend payment as a result.

Donate was the wrong word. If you make an investment in a company, you should get some kind of return from it.

Because when you give someone an investment you expect them to put the investment to good use, and the company gives some of its profits to you.
Or that money could be used in providing the public with a better service. Remember Railtrack?

And I think that steers us quite nicely onto the issue of whether or not Network Rail is in the public sector. :D

At this point, if I was Zoe I would just lie and say I did! It's not as if you can get arrested for lying.

For what it's worth, anybody who talks about the benefits of an auto gearbox as being able to keep your eyes on the road without having to look down at the gear lever to change up or down CLEARLY isn't a driver.

Or that money could be used in providing the public with a better service.

But seeing as a private individual chose to invest in a private company what's in any business of the public as to what that company does with it's profits? Companies generally want investment in order to grow and people generally want to see a return on their investment (otherwise why invest?), therefore a certain level of the companies profits is given back to the investors.

I get the impression that you would prefer a socialist system where such a situation could not exist, would that be true?

Actually I know people that drive automatics as they need less concentration than manuals and they have no issues with driving an automatic. Are you suggseting these people shouldn't be allowed to drive?

Yes but I doubt very much that the current Labour party do.

Hey Zoe, if you're not a driver, how would you know about the differences between an Auto and a Manual? :)

I agree. You can change gear quite easily without taking your eyes off the road just as you can drive at below the 70mph limit on motorways without taking your eyes off the road.

Manuals have better control and I can change gear when I wan't. Manuals have better fuel enconomy and the maintenance costs are less.

About the only benefit of automatics are its stop go ability in taffic and the comfort/laziness factor.

I dare say performance wise you can get alot more out of a manual alot more effciently than you can its automatic counter part.

In my automatic Golf I don't have to worry about selecting the right gear and changing up/down as necessary. If I want I can drive it as a semi-automatic changing gear without having a clutch. I can concentrate on the driving aspect without worrying about gears.

There are some people with driving licences that have never driven manual cars or find it difficult concentrating on what gear they should be in and driving at the same time. This doesn't mean they should be banned from driving completely does it?

But that doesn't mean they shouldn't be driving at all does it? It was earlier suggested that people that can't concentrate on the road and what gear they should be in shouldn't be driving.
