Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

I've been on the 1646 Cambridge to Ipswich when it was a 755/3. Every seat, aisle and vestibule was completely full and the few people that arrived just as it was about to leave couldn't get on. That was only once though. Sometimes that same service as a 755/3 has seats left as well. (I only travel on Mondays)

17:29 Norwich (originates Stansted) is another regular offender. I’ve lost time at Cambridge North as passengers attempt to find a doorway they can squeeze into whilst several cyclists are left behind. Ridiculous that we stop at Waterbeach as has been raised many times but nothing done about it.

Yes I sometimes take the later train and watch that leaving while sitting on the platform. Sometimes people struggle to get into a 4-car on that one as well

What was the original plan for keeping the /3's and /4's separate? I know the consensus is the bid team got it all very wrong but there must have been some plan to keep the /3's to the regional lines and the /4's on the busier services rather than just a common pool with the /3's on the few lines that must be shorter trains?

There isn’t one really. Planners attempt to keep the 4-cars on the busiest services but this isn’t always possible. Day to day events and fuel range dictate what ends up on what. Only thing that has to be strictly adhered to is 755/3 on the Sudbury branch and often spare units are at Colchester/Ipswich to enable an easy swap if necessary.

I know most of the platforms can’t fully accommodate but would there be any chance of a 755/3 x2 combo happening?

755/3s operate through to Cambridge from Ipswich & Norwich on a daily basis. At peak times they regularly cause complaints on X.

Progress I suppose given the complaints about the overcrowding on the 153s a number of years ago.

No that won’t happen. Frequency enhancement would have to be the way forward.

And I took a 153 to Cambridge vice a 3-car 170 on many occasions. Not a pleasent experience.

Cambridge platform 5 and Ipswich platform 1 are too short
Platform 1 at Ipswich looks like it could potentially fit a 3+3 configuration, but the overhead wires would need to be extended and it seems it'd be a bit too expensive/difficult.

We used to have up to 3 DMUs in there back in the day often hanging off. Just the one 755 permitted now and nothing goes down to the stops.

I wonder if there is more chance of the 755/3s getting an extra coach added and thrash cupboard enhancements ?. Albeit the Sudbury branch would still need a 3 1/2 car 755 !.

Just saw a triple traction with two units on diesel. Wonder what the cause is for that.

That sounds like something that could be fixed if it was deemed necessary though - more importantly, could one extend the relevant platforms in Cambridge, or use different platforms given the density of services there

How would frequency enhancements (e.g. half-hourly Cambridge services) work with freight paths? That was the reason Ipswich-Peterborough hasn't gone from 2-hourly to hourly, isn't it?

Neither was a loud and draughty 156 with rock hard seats (which are still ploughing away on the Hope Valley where I had the displeasure of catching one a few weeks ago).

Just have to wait for Ely North Jcn to be redoubled.

Any platform or OHL extensions are hideously expensive.

No replacements on the horizon either :(

I can see a 10 and 11 coach triple traction today. I think the pantographs on 755/3s will be too close (less than 80m) and it'll automatically go onto diesel
Would it not be possible to have each outer unit have the pantograph raised? If so, I suspect there may have been a fault or something.

As for the 11-coach, it had 755421 in the middle which was fun to see!

I think it would. Maybe a pantograph was isolated

Yes hope that runs today it was running the stopping 00:30 service. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C34659/2024-06-24#allox_id=0

I could imagine there will be a bit of a muddle today with units as there’s disruption between diss & Norwich as of a trees fallen on the wires & has been defected. Apparently today its 421 on its own as a single 4 forming the 08:00 https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:L68660/2024-06-25/detailed#allox_id=0

I think the wires are switched off as the only trains to run have been 2 ecs 755s to Ipswich and the 0530 which journey check says is 11 coaches

Diesel only permitted until 06:30 then line blocked for repair work to commence. Hopefully up & running again this afternoon.

Cambridge/Stansted/Liverpool services will be cosy via Ely.

Theoretically could a 2 x 755/3 go to the stops with the front unit on diesel or would be add a layer of complexity rendering it not worthwhile?

I think the imbalanced diesel usage would cause issues on the non-electrified sections. They can't raise the pantograph while moving either from what I can tell.

Diesel tanks are all monitored and pans can be raised at line speed in designated areas.

Would certainly not be permitted. All 755s must stop at the X board. It would also add too much responsibility on the driver. COP and ASDO are only to be overridden in an emergency not in day to day operations.

COP and ASDO
What does COP stand for here? And why would ASDO need to be overridden?

Diesel tanks are all monitored and pans can be raised at line speed in designated areas.
But I imagine the added diesel consumption when idling would be enough to reduce their range and require more frequent refuelling - though this may not be a problem depending on how often they are refuelled. As for raising at speed, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that require upgrades to OHLE? If so, it may just be better to extend the line until the end of the platform. Of course none of this is solving Cambridge platform 5, which is the main issue as platforms 3 and 4 are most often used at Ipswich anyway.
