I wonder if the industry and unions would be more open to change if existing staff were protected for pay, even if their duties are downgraded?

You could then have a plan to change things over a period of time, not overnight with people laid off or made to accept huge pay cuts to do a lesser job.

Anyone entering the industry now would know exactly where they stood from day one.

Obviously Pay is a big issue (we all have to live so to speak) BUT the downgrading of Guards duties tended to slow down to a crawl (or even stop) a few years ago, the majority of us are still competent in areas like shunting etc. I still get tested during my rules, years ago guards use to prepare the cabs etc but that went by the wayside, not much has changed Rulebook wise for the Guards in about 10 years (as far as I know and have my rules)

To be honest, this DOO versus Guards debate is getting old now, I really cannot be bothered to justify my role to folk who disagree and I am sure it is the same vice versa. In any case, is this the main thrust of the report? Will removing guards save the biggest single amount, or is it just the most emotional proposal?

Probably a bit of both, it is certainly the most emotive, the trouble is there are a minority of people on here, whom with alot of the times on other subjects I have agreed with who seem to only see the surface of a guards responsibilities, that way it looks like to get rid of us is the "easy option" and that will not change, as I have said earlier a few of these people should actually get on a course and find out what a guard really does...they may learn something

not much has changed Rulebook wise for the Guards in about 10 years

Is there then a case for going through the rulebook and removing certain things that aren't required/done anymore? For instance you mention shunting, now I could be wide of the mark here but at an MU heavy operation like Northern I can't imagine you get much mileage out of your shunting knowledge?

Yeah, I still have shunting in my rules too. The last big change was the loss of lead responsibility if I recall. For the record, I don't consider traincrew posts, or signallers either for that matter, to be skilled jobs. Semi skilled perhaps, but certainly not skilled. Metroland especially likes to promote his 'seniority' as an ex signalman for whatever reason.

I've probably done shunting about 3 times lol BUT it is invaluable when it goes "tits up" especially with awkward broken down DMU's that the line of sight is obscured because of pure design, had 1 a few years back where no matter what the driver did he couldn't get them coupled howling gale, snow etc. he wasn't prepared to do the coupling and shunt movement involved by himself...an interesting night lol (I was bloody frozen)

I have shunted just once for a propelling movement due to a defective cab. You could remove it from the rules, but I would think it is just as well staying in, if only for the fact it takes 5-10 minutes or so to go over during your rules.

Yeah having heard both you and NorthernGuard mention it's use even with MUs then it does make sense to leave it in. I was just thinking out loud really, wondering if there is anything that could be removed from the rulebook, but I'm getting the feeling that there might not be much (and what there might probably won't be worth it).

We used to do it on the sleeper at Carstairs every night also, but I think DB provide a shunter themselves nowadays.

Metroland especially likes to promote his 'seniority' as an ex signalman for whatever reason.

On one hand were told don't rely on technology, then you are happy to get on a train (Don't they rely on technology?). On the other you boast how working class you are (I never did understand why people aspire to be of the labouring classes), but you want Middle England wages. On another hand you are telling us how important guards, and how much training they have to have, but then say they are semi-skilled at best?

Make your mind up.

I don't actually regard railway operations staff as unskilled, In fact spend a lot of time explaining the day-to-day problems and challenges, but if you do that's fine. But take a pay cut accordingly, and stop whining how indispensable you are.

Finally you don't know what jobs I have done, it is completely irrelevant in any case to this debate.

I am hopefully informing the less well informed that DOO is not unsafe and the claims made about the effectiveness of guards (or the replacement by revenue protection inspectors) is from overblown to downright lies purely for self-interest reasons by the RMT and others (usually guards and fuddy-duddy drivers).

This is turn diverting precious resources that could be used for real improvements, while maintaining practices from Edwardian England.

The only reason this McNulty thread is centred on DOO, is because the usual suspects are frightened they have no ability whatsoever about finding another job, in the rail industry or elsewhere. More to the point, last time I looked, in most cases you keep your old rate of pay should you be downgraded.

Nevertheless it's all a fruitless waste of time trying to have a debate and sensibly cut costs because agreement will never be reached, because some people cannot accept compromise, sensible and realistic safety management, or any sort of logic based argument. IE why track circuit clips are completely irrelevant with most new signalling schemes, and large parts of the network with AB signalling, the very lines where Guards tend to be employed. Not the high volume suburban services (dare I say DOO services), shifting 20 times more traffic, which seem to miraculously work quite safely.

I fully expect the Unions to still be debating on whether Rich Tea or Digestives are fully safety compliant and the appropriate break-time provision, long after the money has run out and half the network has closed.

I wonder if the industry and unions would be more open to change if existing staff were protected for pay, even if their duties are downgraded?

They are protected, unless they are made completely redundant and re-employed on new contracts.

Metroland, if all you're going to do is post offensive claptrap then maybe you should do us all a favour and go away.

Metroland just one simple question, what is it you do? the way you put your words you sound like someone in training, but when it comes to the actual operations you seem to have no idea? we are either just trying to save our jobs or "fuddy duddy" drivers, Now to have the right to say these sort of things you must have something experience wise to back them up???

I very rarely agree with Metroland, but I can only see 'offensive' posts coming from those 'against' DOO.

Then perhaps you'd like to focus in on the bits about 'fuddy-duddy drivers' etc. I'm sorry, but the guy clearly has a massive chip on his shoulder where traincrew are concerned. I'm not sure what his problem is, but this really isn't the place to be airing it.

I will admit I have just skimmed the last ten or so pages, and it isn't as bad as I remember it being.

I agree with that (irrespective of my thoughts of DOO).

ANG - regarding DOO, the (heavily) refurbished 319s coming to the north west in a few years - I would have a backup plan just in case things don't pan-out how you would like them to.

Then you obviously have not read all 23 pages of this thread, i am opposed to DOO, but on no occasion have i been offensive to anyone and in fact like you i do not always agree of what Metroland has to say, i will listen to what he has to say and try to counter his position with my interpretation of it, but i will not post offensive remarks to someone i have never met in public (unless of course he has been on my rain and i dont know what he looks like).

I have already corrected myself. I don't need people to tell me what I 'obviously' have or haven't done. Thanks.

they will not be going to my neck of the woods BUT even then can you really see anyone completely upgrading all the signalling/Platforms/infrastructure for what?? a couple of lines? won't happen in my career time, as I have said previously I have no doubt it will come (DOO) but not for a few decades yet

What is required is a commercially trained customer care type who just deals with punters and leaves the operational side to the bloke who's trained - the driver.

Actually my dear friend i am also trained to do operational role, not just the driver. Glad you think that all we are 'Customer care Types' Thank You very much for belittling my job a little bit more.

I fear that is wishful thinking. Think of all the stock to be replaced in 20 years (just for Northern). You can guarantee it will all be built/refurbished as DOO. Once that is done, there is the justification straight away for the other upgrades required.

I would say between 20-30 years it will prob go DOO (as I said not in my career time) however the Northern Network is so dated due to lack of investment, Semaphores are still common throughout our region, as well as 1 man SB, etc, the investment would have to be massive, and personally I can't see that happening for a few decade, whats caused the main arguments here is about a few people not really having a clue what a guard actually does, which not only riles people (including myself) it actually shows a complete lack of understanding, I have spent almost all of my 4 decades on the railway wether its family or myself actually working it, I know its nowhere near a perfect world BUT its not just about pounds n pence if that was the case 75% of lines would be shut (beeching would have done that in round 2) its about more, the railway is a living/breathing entity which people either love or hate, it has everything from history to drama to technology and I am proud to be a part of it

The kind of thing i was on about really. Sarcasm is not your strong point either. Anyway check the times of your supposed apology and the time my message was posted and you will see that it is all of 5 minutes. Which is the time it took me to read your message and reply to it!

At the end of the day DOO will come in on my line sooner rather then later. All i want from it is that they pay me off with enough money that will last until i get a job with the same salary and i keep my travel facilities (that are not free, i get taxed on them) and that i do not lose any current or future pensions. Not much to ask for is it, after all Merchant bankers and even Mr Corbett is going to be looked after, why cant i ask for the same protection?

If you are going to try and make a point about the way someone conducts themselves, it is best you don't try to make cheap remarks when doing so. Pot kettle. I'm more than happy to go through your posting history - you are not exactly squeaky clean are you, taking cheap shots here there and everywhere with people who disagree with you about any number of things.

I agree with ANG. If you have a problem with me, PM me.

I would hope for more than that for anyone who is likely to be affected - providing that people don't turn their nose up at jobs with a similar salary (not saying you would), and start taking the biscuit.

I have monitored this thread for a while and feel that perhaps now I should say something.

I am a non-commercial guard working on the SWT metro network and as such I think it is safe to say that my job is very much at risk. It is a concern to me that my job is at risk but I do not fear it, I have been made redundant and displaced by SWT twice already and I have no fear of not being able to adapt to a new challenge again.

Personally I am not convinced that DOO is safe, but I don't think it is unsafe either and I do believe that DOO will come to SWT in my area sooner or later. Many people outside the railway (and some ignorant people on this forum) have a completely blinkered view of exactly what my job entails and just how much I need to know to do my job, the recent thread about knowing a route a little TOO well is a prime example, it isn't just a case of blowing my whistle and pressing buttons.

Many of my colleagues are quite happy to take the company shilling and make just the bare minimum of effort, some of them are quite happy to sit in the middle cab and read the paper all day. But that's not for me, I get bored easily and that is why I really work my trains, I operate the doors from within the train I do my best to keep my trains clean I make myself available to my passengers should they need me. I know that my method of working is not the norm among my colleagues but that is how I want to work.

But all of that is largely worthless as I do not bring in any money, I am probably making my passengers feel more reassured etc but that is not financially quantifiable so my position dispensable. The chances are that I will be a commercial guard before too long, if that happens I'll probably enjoy my job more and I will have more job security, but for the time being I'll just keep on doing what I do and keep trying not to worry too much about DOO.

Personally the thought of DOO challenges me to adapt (again), I've been in the industry since 1994 and have no intention of going anywhere else. I am not a fan of DOO but I know it will come sooner or later, and the railway will be worse off as a result.

But if we are looking at making cutbacks there are other ways of doing it. I have just gone through a 15 day period on my roster where I only had two booked jobs.

5 Free days
7 Spare days
1 Training day
2 Rostered days

Bear in mind that on some of those spare days I picked up other people's work, but that isn't really the point.

There are so many ways to save money before people get made redundant, I don't understand why there is not more focus on productivity, I would far rather be out working than sitting around the mess room watching daytime TV. Of course it is nice to have an easy 'spare' day from time to time but it is a ridiculous state of affairs when I have as many booked jobs as I do spare jobs.

Please feel free to go through every single post i have done and then (sorry not telling you what to do, i suggest) you create a thread about me and everything i have done, include all spelling mistakes, personal abuse of members of this forum, all inaccuracies i have made, even check with the moderators as to whether i have had warnings, suspensions and bans. I wont take offence, in fact i wont even comment.

Please also note i do not have a problem with either, oh just like to add i am not perfect either.
