128 arrived at the Riverside Museum yesterday. Apparently it’s already on public display today, can anyone confirm?

1980s?....I thought they were built in 1977!

I suppose the Subway only re-opened in 1980, so they are associated more with that decade than the previous one.

It does within the article say both 're-opened in April 1980' and of the trains 'introduced in 1980'. I don't actually see that it actually states built in 1980 in the text.

Bit of a write up in one of the Scottish dailies, mentions some of the issues highlighted in this thread such as the signage, journey times and (sort of) addresses the disruption.

Glasgow Subway admits new trains mean longer journey times​

When asked about the specific numbers on delays, cancellations and suspensions for this year and in comparison, to previous years a spokesperson said: “Until this year, we have not kept a formal note of suspensions or reasons for them.”

I went down again today and found one on the Inner just after 4. Your best bet is going in the peak as @jagardner1984 suggested and waiting at one of the island platforms until one comes along – and if you're there more than 25 minutes then you'll know there aren't any!

Thanks for the advice, not sure if its worth the 414 mile journey but ill definitely consider having a go at riding one before final withdrawal, or if they hopefully run some sort of farewell tour.

For those unfamiliar with the system - when it opened, all 15 stations were of the island platform configuration however modernisation meant slight changes to some - you’ll always see the trains on both circles at every station, BUT you’ll only be able to access them easily at the following 9:

Cowcaddens
St George’s Cross
Kelvinbridge
Kelvinhall
Cessnock
Kinning Park
Shields Road
West Street
Bridge Street​

I thought I try to grab a view of the last G2 train running today….. I spent nearly 90 minutes on the system and it was all G3 stock! My next part of call was Riverside Museum, and guess what was taking pride of place?

I went to Glasgow yesterday on the off chance of seeing one of the old units before they are all retired, and was rewarded as soon as I ducked underground when 106 trundled into St. Enochs at around 12.30pm. Problem was that it was on the Outer line and I was on the Inner. IO chased it around and caught it at Kelvinbridge, taking it one stop to St. Georges Cross where the driver paused to allow me to take a few pics and also to tell me this was the unit's last run of the day, he was off to the depot and it was the final time he would drive one of the old girls. Happy to have captured the moment.

Yes. Apparently Stadler are responsible for disposal and they have said they DON’T plan to scrap them. Wherever possible they will be sold to collectors (at a cost of £5,000 each). The purchaser will be responsible for collection from the Broomloan Depot. The first (128) has gone to Riverside.

Very interesting that Stadler are planning to move them on to pastures new rather than scrapping them

It’ll help pay for the Xmas Party? I’m old enough to remember when the G1’s were taken out of service. GCT offered them at £1 but the caveat was that they could not be structurally stressed following being lifted out of ’the pit’. The wooden construction helped their fast demise, and their uniqueness meant nobody could ever hope to put one into a Heritage setting. A damaged trailer coach was sawn in half and screwed to the wall at Buchanan Street following the 1980 refurbishment. Beamish and Critch indicated interest but I’ve no idea if they followed through.

The Metro-Cammell G2’s are stronger in construction, and at least be watertight above ground (the G1’s weren’t) so but I still find it odd to see these in a museum!

Beamish did follow through but only as a source of spare parts for their tram fleet. After taking what they wanted from them, the empty bodies were dumped within the grounds of Beamish and eventually scrapped.

Had a feeling that would’ve been where they went. Several of the ex-SR 314 driving cars went there for disposal a few years back when it was trading as JR Adam & Sons

I asked years ago - skipped! It wasn’t free-standing following removal (remember it was only the platform side with lattice doors extant) being cut in half does that.

Yes, in fact there's two carriages there, 4 and 39. One of them has very cleverly been fitted with a screen to give the impression of being on a train in service.

That ones surprisingly clean. Last time I was on the subway about a month ago they were starting to look quite filthy, with lots of orange streaking down them.
Still think an odd decision to go for such a white livery.

I have been on the system from 0930 this morning and haven’t seen any of the old stock. Does anybody know if any are out I may have missed, or are coming out later?
