I popped into Gilberdyke yesterday just to see the station and tick it off my list. I was there for 20 minutes and saw eight separate services (including 1 freight) and 6 different classes.

I understand that it was a very untypical visit but I do not think I can think off anywhere that can match the variety.

Can you?

I was pleasantly surprised by Gilberdyke recently. Doncaster or Swinton are quite good spots not too far from there.

Gilberdyke used to be called Staddlethorpe. Don't know why it was renamed.

The name change to 'Gilberdyke' was in January 1974. The local council had been campaigning for it, as they considered that the old name (= 'Staddlethorpe') no longer satisfactorily represented the area, this following the new housing developments in Gilberdyke village (on the North side of the railway line) which had expanded over the years, right up to the railway line and station.

When I changed trains at Gilberdyke last summer, I seem to remember there were tonnes of tiny flies on the platform that ended up landing all over my clothes, and I had to pick literally hundreds of them off when I finally got on the train - it was awful.
I assume I just got really unlucky, but I am still going to try my best never to go there again!
