What’s this trackside equipment?

I’m guessing this is some kind of LED lighting but what determines its placement? It wasn’t obviously lighting points or a walking route… It was spotted near Crewe…

Yes junction lighting. Placed at junctions which require frequent maintenance inspections to negate the need to bring portable kit lighting.

There was a post recently on one of the Levenmouth Facebook pages where the page owner was asking why lighting was being installed at the crossovers (he thought it might be for drivers) and somebody replied as above.

They look obviously like lights to me..can see the LED's in the design.

The OP wasn't denying that they are lights. He said they look like LEDs. He was saying there didn't appear to be any points for them to illuminate.

If not points, it will be something else that's likely to need maintenance access at short-ish notice. Axle counters, AWS magnet or TPWS grids possibly?

It it alongside somewhere where trains reverse? Sometimes you have short areas where drivers of stock that's formed of different units coupled together with no corridor connections need to get out, walk a short distance to the next door, then get back in again, then carry on walking through the train inside.

http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/electrification/neutral.shtm#crewe lists one at 159m 0ch, so 1m north of Crewe Station.

However the Google Maps satellite view also suggests there's a walking route from Crewe Coal Yard access point to Crewe north Junction at that place as well.

Thanks for the location - that's very helpful.

Here's a pic taken from forward facing CCTV very close to your google maps blob. You can see the lights on both sides of the track. It will almost certainly be one of these you took a photo of.

This is definatrely junction lighting - it helps maintenance teams to see when they are maintaing key sets of S&C and/or walking around complex areas at night.
