WSR Diesel Gala Tickets

I am trying to buy a child 1 day rover ticket for the WSR Diesel Gala this weekend. but when I try to buy the website says that child tickets can only be purchased with an adult ticket. Does anyone have any idea why this is and if there is any way around this?

Well DevonTrains child rover tickets are only valid for 5-15 years of age. I doubt if the WSR would have the responsibility to sell you a ticket as probably any heritage railways would without an adult with you.

The odd thing is I have just attempted to buy a standalone child ticket on a normal, non-gala day and encountered to issues.

Why? The real railway has no issues with under 16s travelling alone so why would a heritage railway?

It might be because it tends to be the younger enthusiasts who tend to be a bit over "enthusiastic", and if there isn't a adult there to keep an eye on them it's left up to the volunteers to keep them in check, which to my mind hardly seams fair to them, having seen the youngsters at the svr diesel gala I'm not sure I blame them

That's not to say the OP doesn't know how to behave but I'm sure that has a bearing on things

A lot of the "over enthusiastic" people at diesel galas are well over 16 and I have seen far worse than over enthusiasm by people 3 or 4 times that age. While I don't like being associated with and am embarrassed by the arm flinging contingent they are relatively harmless compared to often much older people who hurl expletive laden abuse at families because their kids want to get close to a loco when said loser wants to take a photo.

Yep I'm sure alcohol has a big bearing on a lot of the load shouting that does go on but, an adult has only themselves to blame but the railway has a duty of care to children that I'm sure they think they can do without

I was there on Thursday afternoon and Friday and I'm happy to say I didn't see any impolite behaviour, everyone was very orderly and friendly. The trains drifted off timetable a bit on Thursday, about 20 minutes behind at worst, but on Friday everything I was on ran nicely to time.

The weather was mainly sunny on Thursday, more cloudy on Friday but dry, and I thought it was a very enjoyable couple of days. The locos were well turned out too, especially 50033 in a very shiny new coat of large logo blue. Well done to all concerned!
