NXEA Liverpool Street to Ipswich - First Class

Yes, I know we've had loads of these knocking around at the moment, and i'm unfortunatly having to do one myself...

Basically what is First Class like with NXEA from Liverpool Street to Ipswich, with their Class 90 and Mark 3 stock???

The website says not much, apart from some more space...

The website's correct. You don't get anything apart from a nicer seat. No freebies etc.

There's some good-value advance fares out there for the journey though, it's not a lot more than Standard so you can't really moan.

Pretty sure the only extra is free tea/coffee from the buffet though a few services do breakfast in the morning I think.

It's ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!

Nicer seat? If Standard Class can be WORSE than First Class, it must be something like "Indian Railways"!

Honestly, the seats are rubbish and too low, the armrests don't move, the reclining mechanism is broken on ALL of the seats (meaning that some are terribly low), most of the sliding doors don't work so the carriages are loud, I could go on...

Refreshments: There are NONE, not even a cup of tea - not even WATER!

NOTE: Admittedly since you're only paying £5 extra for First Class it's worth it (to escape the even worse Standard Class!), but run like the wind from NXEA's InterCity service! It's so old the BR logo's are still visible!

2+2 or 2+1? FCC is OK in my opinion - much better than Standard Class, and well policed!

Nope, it's a 12 car 321. 360's aren't cleared north of Stowmarket.

However, from December, the 1702 stopper to Norwich will be a 12 car 317/7.

Nothing free in 1st class. Not even the London Evening Standard is handed out now it's free anyway :roll:. At-seat service is now done only on the 07.40 up/10.00 dn (staff permitting &/or RFM in set). Recently introduced 06.50/09.00 & 07.10/09.30 where withdrawn within weeks of NX not pre-qualifiing for the 2012-17 month franchise.

Yes the 1702 is a 321, but 360's are cleared with restrictions, mainly Stow on the Up, thus to save delay to services, as the Signaller may miss the Up Rd service as he is busy elsewehere (Ips/Fxst) 321's are run.
There are also one or two restrictions at Norwich too

But they haven't fitted sockets - so if your battery runs out, you can't take advantage of it!

I've often wondered why Anglia don't offer so much as a free cup of tea or coffee in First Class, but when their AP fares start at a bargain £12, with plenty of off-peak availability, then I suppose one is expected to be able to afford to buy one's own refreshments!

I found their FC offering to be reasonable but no beter. Mind you, having paid £8 from Southend to Norwich I couldn't complain! Having said that, I also had a 321 FC as far as Shenfield, and - not for the first time - I can tell you that the FC on NXEA 321s is utterly appalling. It is worse than pretty much any Standard 2+2.
