I forgot to tap out at the tram stop for the Metrolink trams Manchester. Is there anything I can do about it?

I made 4 contactless journeys in total and it was on the final one where I forgot to tap out.

I should have paid £3.50 but I paid £13.40.

Being dyslexic I can forget stuff. I almost forgot to tap out on my third journey. It's not an excuse but a reason why I didn't tap out. Also in London one doesn't tap out on a tram.

Actually I have gome to their Web site and it says incomplete fares are £4.60 so I don't know what has happened.

I'm downloading my statement to see what that says.

It turns out I also forgot to touch out of my second journey.

My girlfriend forgot once and sent them an email apologising and asking for a refund, which they gave her. So it might be worth emailing them!

That looks like you've been charged for a single zone journey (1.40), a zone 1&2 (£2.80), and 2 maximums (2 x £4.60) which don't count towards any of the caps.

If you expand the daily summary there'll be a link to the enquiry form, which has forgotten touch-out as one of the subjects.

Thanks for both your replies. I will do this tomorrow.

The second trip I was returning from a conference. On the fourth trip I was returning from looking at the outside of the disused Mayfield railway station. In my opinion, no trip to Manchester is complete for me if I don't see this. Never been inside though.

I was doing it as the journey should have been free, having hit the daily limit but of course I forgot to tap out.

Last November, I somehow managed to achieve a double touch-in at Victoria, which of course it counted as an incomplete journey, followed by counting my touch-out on arrival at Heaton Park as the start of another incomplete journey. My return from Heaton Park was some hours later and that was taken as a single fare.

This totalled £13.00 rather than the £4.30 I'd been expecting, but with the transactions and times laid out on the website to check the day after, it only took a very brief email to get it sorted. I think they replied in a couple of hours (on a Saturday) and the refund was in the bank a couple of working days later - excellent service, I thought.

I have now replied to them.

If they needed any proof, I certainly have photographic and video evidence of where I was. I know it won't come to that.

Still, here are a few photos. One is looking towards Deansgate railway station; the second is the front of the former Mayfield railway station and the final one is of the railway going over the canal as I headed to the YHA hostel.

If you don't hear anything back, the below link allows you to view and query contactless charges:

Thanks.

That is the route I used to contact them.

Just an update to say I got my refunds so thank you.

I can now put the expenses through work for the actual amount.

I may end up using the trams in Nottingham in August but it seems they operate similar to TfL and one only needs to tap in and not out.

That’s because in both cases there’s only one fare, which gets debited when you tap in.
Manchester has many different fares based on the zones travelled through, so you can only be charged correctly if you identify your start and end points by tapping in and out.

That does make sense.

This isn’t entirely correct. Nottingham now has a ‘short hop’ fare for journeys completed within 20 minutes. This is £1.50 instead of the usual £3.20 for a single on the tram. But to get this fare you have to tap in and out.

If after 20 minutes you get off a tram and immediate tap, as if to tap out, what would happen?

You would have to ask them for a definitive answer, but I expect it would decide that was the start of a second journey and the first was to be charged at the standard £3.20. I was using my phone so don't have complete visibility, I saw an initial 10p charge, which a couple of days later was updated to a correct total.
The daily cap is £5.30, so only a few trips will hit it regardless of tapping out.

Interesting to know, thanks. I didn’t see it on their Web site, but that may have been my failing.

Thanks. I was thinking along the lines of being dyslexic I might accidentally tap out when I didn't need to.

One would want to be certain of the time they tapped in and remember that in case they get off 18 minutes after they first tapped. I can't always remember times I start something.

I just checked my travel and I got refunds but only back to single journeys so the total is showing £4.30 instead of £3.50. Not sure if it is worth raising this with them for such a small amount. Having explained the situation, I would have expected it to be capped to £3.50.

I am claiming this back from work, so I can't overclaim, but I could claim £3.50 and instead of the full amount.
