Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

You lot all overreact. The training course is being trialled 3rd of June. It's going to happen. New drivers are no longer being trained on 455s as well
Does this mean that from tomorrow Monday 3 June 2024 South Western Railway mainline drivers will be trained to drive class 701 trains and having completed the training will start driving class 701 trains for South Western Railway metro services? I am not clear what "trialled" means.

It's a 2 week trial of the course, then feedback, and then approval. Afterwards drivers will start to be trained

I don't know how serious you were being, but that has basically already happened.

Problems with DCO dispatch are not a major issue with getting the trains in to service anyway since all trains will have a guard onboard who can dispatch when required. That's not to say the introduction wouldn't have been if there were no DCO dispatch at all.
It's probably more of case of some people never wanting the trains to enter service, but at the same time having no answers for SWR's capacity issues.

Meanwhile, in the different world over on Southeastern, off-peak metro services are being restored to pre-Covid levels from December.

The South Western is a sorry run-down shadow of its former self.

and its had full DOO ie no guard or 2nd person for 30 years on the metro services

Not sure about that the main line is still pretty good and the 455's might be old but internally they did a very good job with the refurb with plenty of space, comfy seats with good seat pitch and the retractioning bought them the extra decade. Shame they didn't do a Renatus on them and fit air con as we wouldn't be nearly ten thousands posts in talking about the 701s!

The suburban network has had frequencies slashed and gone from a mainly 10-car railway to an 8-car railway.

Ignoring the corrosion issues common across all Mk3 designs maybe they could go on, and on. But that does nothing to address capacity. Keeping the fleet frozen as it is means that SWR can never increase capacity, which will be required at some stage, arguably in some cases right now.

Just a gentle reminder, this thread is for updates regarding the introduction of Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway

Please create a new thread (or use an existing one) to discuss any spin-off topics.

Thanks :)

It wouldn’t say it’s outdated. CD/RA is in use at virtually every London terminal apart from Waterloo (as I think was discussed upthread).
I was referencing the white light or green flag into a DOO monitor, can't remember the last time I saw that method used

Not sure of the relevance though, well documented at this point that the guards are not holding anything up

Thanks for this clarification. I hope the course is approved and mainline driver training starts shortly after the end of the two week trial. Five months have passed since the first trial runs, I would not want a further similar wait for the start of mainline driver training when the introduction of these ninety new Class 701 trains is already four years behind the original schedule causing a shortage of electric rolling stock everywhere on the South Western Railway electrified network.

This is not a benefit; ask a wheelchair user or some lone female travellers. It also, categorically, will not be introduced on the 701s; nobody is destaffing trains in this day and age (thankfully).

The GWR IET fleet requires guard dispatch where no platform staff are provided; as such some services are guarded owing to stops where dispatchers cannot be guaranteed. So, this is an established Firstgroup method of working and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to consider it an option for the 701s.

Perhaps someone should fix the issue with the cameras then, I noticed the Avanti IETs appear to have different style cameras, are they still no good ?

Has this not been done yet? I find that rather surprising!
It has, it's just some stations have failed. The PTI test runs are focusing on those stations which currently require guard dispatch.

How are Avanti IETs relevant to this discussion? Different stock, different locations, with different methods of working agreed.

Albeit GWR

Into a DOO camera, Slough every day for 387’s and DOO 800’s

Didcot Parkway for DOO 800’s

They’ll be designed for DOO dispatch, why else would they exist , so are they approved ? Whether Avanti choose to seek an agreement to use them or or not is irrelevant

They’ll be designed for DOO dispatch, why else would they exist regardless of wether Avanti choose to use them or not ?

“Designed for DOO dispatch” doesn’t necessarily equal fitness for purpose, and certainly doesn’t automatically equal suitability for use at another TOC’s locations, on a different stock.

The fact you think it does reveals your own lack of understanding of the industry, I’m afraid.

Off-topic, but, they're being used in addition to the existing dispatch arrangement, not as a replacement for the guard. Whether that'll change in the future, is anybody's guess.

They absolutely did, one of the best refurbs of the old BR trains era. However, I think the 701's are worthy successors and was really impressed with the one I was on last week. They just now need to get more of them on the track and in public service.

I see on RTT that the second outbound one was delayed departing Waterloo by 10 minutes as well. Has the reliability of 043 now ended?
