West Midlands Day Ranger

Hi all, I was just wondering if the West Midlands Day Ranger/Rover was still a thing as I've only come across it on the National Rail website from 2007, I was planning to travel between the stations of;
Coventry, Birmingham Intl or New St, Nuneaton, Leamington Spa, and a few others in the Birmingham area.

I'm aware of the nNetwork ticket however this wouldn't allow me to travel towards Nuneaton.

I'll be travelling on Friday 16th February

I tried to buy one of these at Euston's Avanti run ticket office and was told that neither staff member had ever been asked for one in 10-15 years of working there! I gave them the code (WM1) and was told that it didn't exist. Then I was told they probably weren't valid on Avanti (they are) and that they could only sell them within the area they are valid (that may be true but I don't think so). After about 15 minutes of searching for it (there wasn't anyone else waiting) I gave up and went to St Pancras.

The Thameslink run ticket office had also never heard of it (fair enough as it's not valid anywhere on their network), but EMR had a very helpful gentleman who turned his screen round to let me talk him through it and found it very quickly. Thumbs up to EMR!

I haven't had such a frustrating ticket buying experience since I was told by a Southern ticket office clerk that the Gold Card area was the same as the Network Card area and then refusing to look at my evidence that it wasn't!

And yet I would hope these ticket office staff don't support the idea of closing ticket offices...

If the service has any point in continuing it needs to be able to offer 'over and above' what a robot can offer (ie an on line ticket purchase offer)- good to hear of EMR staff rising to the challenge.

Thought it was only at Sheffield station that they still come up with nonsense like that!

I've bought it several times (along with other rangers for places around the UK) from Reading and Oxford and a few other stations and never had an issue - the staff are always friendly and helpful and manage to find the ticket sometimes with a little prompting from the railrover website saying what to search for.

Thanks, I'll give them this code next time. There will definitely be a next time, as it's such a great ticket. I used it yesterday, purely for the Avanti acceptance from Rugby to Stoke. One day I'll actually use one to go on a proper explore.

Just to clarify, the code is the letter 'I' (for India), followed (no gap) with the digits '274' (and not the number '1274').

Yes. I274, not the four digit number. Very handy ticket, I've used it on a number of occasions for "odd" journeys. Note that in my experience gatelines don't like it at all, and you have to be let through.

The best way is to tell the retailer to go to
Rangers and Rovers
In the rangers and rovers column type WM1
After pressing WM1 button a whole range of rovers will come up so press the one desired.

Are you sure? The adult fare is £34.00, but the railcard discounted price should be £22.40 for most railcards, and just £17.00 for a 16-17 railcard/child fare.

Yes, or pretty much so, 4 digit letter codes are the ticket code but from this they don’t open up the options of say discounts and concessions, happy to be shown a way of doing and it being issued.
In star you have to go through to rail rovers and use WM1.
All tickets and rovers for this vary, as an example I375 doesn’t work on the rangers and rovers screen but works on the anywhere to anywhere screen.

But there are a few issuing systems so it’ll probably vary.

The ticket office at Northampton was completely closed today despite it being carnival day and Saints playing at Twickenham (maybe that was where the staff went). So I couldn't buy my next West Midlands Day Ranger.

Am I correct in thinking I only need to buy a ticket from the Ranger's boundary if I want to travel further? So could I buy a Kidsgrove to Macclesfield day return and stay on the Avanti from Rugby, despite Avanti not serving Kidsgrove?

Yes you're allowed to do a "non stop split" when using a rover or season ticket

Bootle New Strand also managed to sell one some years ago - albeit suggesting that I might have a gap in my ticketing as they (understandably but wrongly) weren’t convinced by me arguing that it’s valid from Crewe.

I've brought many West Midlands Day Rangers (WMDR) from Liverpool Lime Street, & split with a Liverpool, Crewe day return.

Biggest annoyance WMDR is not valid on the direct Crewe - Shrewsbury - Hereford TfW service, even though it's valid at those stations on other services

Crewe via Stafford or Stoke-on-Trent, Shrewsbury via Wolverhampton/Telford Central only and Hereford via Worcester FS/Great Malvern. Also means that places like Leominster/Ludlow/Church Stretton, Whitchurch and Nantwich are all off the West Midlands Day Ranger map.
