I am planning to travel from London Paddington to St Germans in Cornwall on Monday 17th June returning on Thursday 20th June, although I will be travelling home to Haslemere via Reading.
i have a Freedom Oyster Card and a Senior railcard. My question is. I am better buying a ticket from London Paddington to St Germans or an extension ticket from zone 6 to Reading. I know otherwise I cannot travel on the direct GWR train. I cannot find a fare for the zone 6 extension to be able to make a comparison. Thank you very much for my advice you can give me.

The forum ticket website seem to indicate that the cheapest option with your Older Person Freedom Pass and Senior Railcard doesn't include any split in Greater London and it's just a straight PAD-St Germans on Monday 17th. Letting you take the 0904 direct train for £52.10 as an Advance Single or a single Super-Off Peak (usually with a connection at Plymouth) for £47.25

Presumably the OP is also looking for tickets for the return leg St Germans to Haslemere, though?

You can get a super off-peak return Haslemere to St Germans for £92.95 and that is valid via Any Permitted route, including via London. So on the outbound, subject to peak restrictions, you'd be able to travel on that ticket from Paddington to St Germans on the outbound leg, and from St Germans to Haslemere via Reading (and also via London if desired, or not) on the return.

I make it slightly cheaper, though, to do separate tickets:

Single Boundary Zone 6 to Reading: £11.40 peak or £10 off-peak
Super off-peak return Reading to St Germans £68.60
Off-peak single Reading to Haslemere £11.40 Evening return (not valid before 12 noon, but assume you wouldn't make it from Haslemere to Reading much before then anyway)
