Any news on 507001 returning to service? I saw a photo posted on Twitter on Saturday showing it outside Birkenhead North depot, with several orange-jacketed people in the cab.

From what I’ve seen today there looks to be only 2 three car services running which consist of 507010 and 507007
Looks as though 507023 & 507029 are back to form 2U61(2042 Southport to Hunts Cross) this evening after working ECS from Birkenhead North E.M.U.D via Kirkdale C.S.

507007 failed earlier today on the Southport line and has been reported as being in Birkenhead North depot shed.

I believe the other 507s on the Southport line this evening are; 507010 (3 car) and 507003 & 507017 (6 car).

Hopefully a return to 6 car workings now on the Southport line as the week progresses.

Still at Birkenhead North depot. It did run under its own power on Saturday, which is a promising sign. 507018, the other unit coupled to 001 when it derailed has also not returned to service.
They may both be in a queue awaiting inspection (& any repairs). Hopefully they return soon.

Has anyone seen 507016 recently, it does not seem to have been working lately but unsure of its whereabouts?

I passed Birkenhead North EMU Depot at about 1350 and 2 x Class 507 had come out of the depot with at least two more inside with at least 1 x Class 230 for compant.

I was at West Kirby on Saturday afternoon, not long after 001 had gone back to the depot. It looked as if a wooden sleeper might have failed (either that or it was cut up in order to dig it out) and a clean fishplate applied to the siding.

A fringe benefit was that Platform 1 was being used for stabling, so now would be a good time to go if you need Platform 2 at West Kirby!

plus 9999 pound postage.
Very good!

Question: Why can't 507001 be moved by rail?

I realise it needs the third rail to move under it's own steam, but couldn't it be moved by someone with a loco fitted with tight lock couplers (IIRC Europhoenix 37's have these plus some 57's)?

Surely this would cost less than £10k?

Where would it be moved to? I believe no home has yet been found for the unit and when (if) a base is found, it may not be rail-connected anyway. It would certainly not be cheap to move the unit by rail once the cost of planning, pathing and traincrew have been paid for.

It is going to the Tanat Valley Light Railway in Shropshire. There is no mainline rail connection to the site.

A sign of change, as this Friday (31st May) marks the final time these ECS moves (below) appear on the WTT.

These four headcodes have very rarely run over the past at least 6 months due to less 507/08s operating on the Northern line and with maintenance of the Class 777s now performed at Kirkdale depot, as oppose to Birkenhead North (for the 507/08s). In recent years, these moves were generally worked by units operating on the Ormskirk line as part of the peak 6 car services and those units finishing on diagrams early evening. 5D17/5B17 were generally maintenance runs while 5B87/88 were exam runs.

I believe the 5B87/88 moves have been in the WTT since the September 1997 timetable change, reflecting the closure of Hall Road depot, so a real closure of a chapter with seeing them both now removed from WTT from next week.

Ah of course, thanks, I should have thought of that. And I imagine the expense is because you can't move a whole unit on one lorry, I presume it will need to be split.

Great to see we're back to three pairs on the Southport line. That should make today's rides a lot more pleasurable.

Traction motor repairs, rebrush. Oh those G310 TM's.
Has some lovely sounding motors when VEH 64382 is trailing, hopefully it’s back out soon

I must be blind! Missed the posts saying 016 was back in service, does anyone know what services it will run today?

Thanks. Just to confirm, 007 and 016 are indeed working the 14.21 Hunts X - Southport at present.

016 appears to have a brand new motor-alternator set fitted to 64382 which may partly explain its latest absence. 007's rheostatic braking was in full voice going the other way too: symphonic stuff. :)

I had 023 and 029 on 2S22- 1121 Hunts Cross to Southport which in turn worked 2U29 - 1242 Southport to Hunts Cross on its way back, don’t know how useful this gen would be but I’m currently having a couple of pints in Southport waiting for the next ones to come back from Hunts Cross

003 and 017 are working 2U40 1527 Southport-Hunts across

Thanks for today's gen. Had a go on all six units out and 007, 016 and 029 all put in fine performances; 003 and 023 were OK but 017 was not impressive.

507001 is visible inside Birkenhead North Depot at the back of the main shed, whilst I assume 018 is in the repair shop. Both units need some attention following the derailment so I'm told.

One vehicle per low loader. Cost is always high due to the planning and resources required including Police escort.

Just had 507023 + 029 to Southport. 023 has been fitted with a overhauled compressor recently.

Just travelled on the 2012 departure for Hunts Cross all three platforms full of 6 car 507's and a 3 car in the sidings, just like the good old days!!!

A diagram I haven't covered yet has failed at Garston heading Down (i.e. just after leaving Hunt's Cross).

Anybody know what 016s first service will be tomorrow? Gonna give a little go on it, preferably what time it gets into Brunswick. Thanks
