Taking this trip as a 'taster' for future Rover/Rangers days out on June 28. Booked advance singles from Sleaford to Skipton and York back home...I guess you can pick up the round robin anywhere and get off anywhere. Never done the Settle and Carlisle and looking forward to a glimpse of Hadrians Wall....not at all bad for about £35 with Senior card!

Anybody else done this round robin?

No, but I'm planning to do it before you are, so I'll let you know how it goes.

For a round robin the value isn't terrific in my opinion, the Ffestiniog round robin for example offers far better value.

Whilst it may not be considered good value when compared with other Round Robins and Ranger tickets , It does offer a saving over the equivalent point to point walk on fare(s).

I think the best Round Robin i've done is an EM Round Robin which was £12.55.

Hi, again, trainfanatic!
I hope you enjoy your trip!!
The Settle & Carlisle and Tyne Valley lines pass through very beautiful country, but if you want to see a bit of Hadrian's Wall you'll have to allow time to catch a bus, possibly from Hexham, I'm not sure. I suggest you check with Traveline.

One question - why book a single from Sleaford to Skipton rather than Leeds, as the Leeds-Skipton section is included in the Round Robin?

Hi Welshman,

I (wrongly) thought that you could only get cheap advance singles to destinations outside the main station areas. I've just looked at an advance single to Leeds and it's the same price as travelling to Skipton. In any event, I may stop off there for an hour or so anyway.

I'll remember that for the future. BTW, can't seem to find any cheap advances to Chester even splitting at Nottingham?

Best Regards

Mike

The availability of advance fares depends on how busy the train is over the busiest section of the route, not on the origin/destination on the ticket! For Sleaford to Skipton, this means the East Coast train between Grantham and Leeds. If it has no cheap "advance seats" left, then it doesn't matter whether you're going from Sleaford to Skipton or King's Cross to Leeds or any other combination of places - as long as your journey involves that train, there will be no cheap advance fares available.

No, I don't think you can get cheap advance tickets for Sleaford-Chester.
But an off-peak return [with railcard] is £35.85p, and by splitting at Nottingham and travelling via Derby you can bring that down to £19.35!
[Off-peak Sleaford-Nottingham £7.45p; Nottingham-Chester £11.90p].

Happy travelling. :D :D

Sorry to drag this thread up, but I have a question about validity... Is it valid on First Scotrail services? There seems to be conflicting advice here , with the NRE website not mentioning FSR on the 'Train companies' section, and the Northern Rail leaflet which says it is valid on all train companies that serve the map shown. Anyone who has done this before care to help?

Scotrail do not serve any of the lines shown. The Newcastle - Carlisle -Glasgow services are Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle. So no problem.

Oh okay I thought they did, the East Coast journey planner was showing it as ScotRail, but I take it it's one of those services where responsibility for the train (along with the staff) changes depending where it is?

Thanks for your help!

It's a Scotrail train operated by Northern staff (at least, Northern guard. Not sure about the drivers, but I suspect that Northern drivers would do it due to route familiarity etc). I would expect it to be valid.
