Evening everyone,

I recently applied for a Grade 3 Signaller position based at Melton Mowbray. Which is quite local to me.

I have completed the first Online test and assessment (30th April)
I received feedback, on ambertrack stating it was good, but I could have gone more in depth with my answers.

My status has moved to assessment centre. Does that mean I've passed the online test and assessments?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Don’t know the rosters I’m afraid but…

South Tottenham is an NX panel and controls Harringay Green Lanes - Wanstead Park, plus a couple of stubs off those lines leading to other lines. 8 London Overground trains an hour and an average of roughly 2/3 freights/ empties an hour. Open 24 hours, freight running all night. Fringe boxes are

Liverpool Street IECC

Two fringes to the Brimsdown desk either side of South Tottenham station (I don’t know how familiar you are with the area but there’s a route from Clapton to Seven Sisters that goes through South Tottenham, although not usually used for passenger service it is a diversion/empty route). All 25kV electrified

One fringe to the Stratford desk (Wanstead Park)

Acton Wells is a single crewed signalbox with a computer desk (Westcad, I believe) inside. Controls Acton Wells Junction, which is a five way junction, so a fair bit of intersecting traffic and a lot of fringe boxes. Also controls down to Kew East Junction and just short of Gunnersbury. 8 London Overground trains an hour and an uncertain but pretty high volume of freight. 3 CCTV crossings, two at Bollo Lane and one at Acton Central. Mixture of 25kV overhead, 750v third rail and non-electrified.

Fringes

Basingstoke ROC Staines desk - Kew East Junction (two fringes, for the Branch and Spur lines either side of Brentford’s stadium)

Richmond SB - just north of Gunnersbury

Thames Valley Signalling Centre Acton desk, Upminster IECC North London Line Central desk, Acton Canal Wharf SB & Wembley Mainline SCC Willesden Panel are all fringe boxes in close proximity to the junction itself

Have a friend who was looking internally for a job, and a grade 7 (relief) role has appeared at London Great Central house. I have no idea about this role, or location, can anyone shed some light on this?

Signalling control of the Chiltern lines out as far as Ayslesbury, Princess Risborough, a little south of Banbury and west to Oxford Parkway.

Grade 7 with 12hrs.
Relief is covering links within only - 4%
Scalable workstations.

Yes mate they will contact you on further time for another assessment which will be different

Looks like I’m in the same position as you - applied for Melton Mowbray, completed the online tests and now sitting at the same status as you, with very similar feedback…

I did send an email and got a response, they confirmed it meant I'd passed. But they haven't opened the assessment centre yet, but when they do, they'll let you know if you've been shortlisted to be invited to attend.

12 hour roster I believe not sure on break patterns, I think its 1.5 hours on and then 1.5 hours off the workstation but dont take that as gospel!

You won’t be put in melton box unless there is a space available and the shifts at 12 hours 6am-6pm or 6pm-6am you will do both days and nights

Okay, 12 hours isn't bad. Done that plenty of times. How does it work then with regards to which box I could end up in? If I get that far.

Melton is used as a central location for Frisby, Melton, Whissendine, Ashwell, Langham, Oakham and Manton boxes so it will be one of those depending on where the vacancies are when you’re in signalling school.

12 hour roster, for both grade 8 and 6 links. When fully staffed - 2 x 1.5 hour breaks per 12 hour shift.

Often that's reduced though, and may be diluted further when the boxes from Crewe area come in.

As said, the Local Operations Manager's office is in the railway station, with the entrance on Platform 3.
I haven't checked but the vacancies could be at several Boxes, some in Shrewsbury, or down the line towards Ludlow.
South the furthest Box was Bromfield, but that could have changed.

Does the advert state where the vacancies is/are?

(When I left 5 years ago Boxes were: 3 boxes actually surrounding the station, then Sutton Bridge Junct, Dorrington, Marshbrook, Craven Arms, Onibury, Bromfield)

I was hoping if someone working as a grade 6 signaller at Saltlet ROC could put into simple terms;

1. What is the shift pattern?

2. Is the advertised salary the exact amount you get paid? Have seen people say Sundays are paid at 1.5x and evening work is paid at 10%.

The advertised Salary is the basic so for grade 6 its £44,373 .

Sundays are outside the working week so paid additionally to this . Hours actually worked on the Sunday are at 150% .
Hours worked between 22:00 and 06:00 are paid an additional 10% - it works out at an extra £19.5 for a 18:00-06:00 nightshift at Grade 6 .
Free/Rest Day worked is paid at 125%

Obviously the exact ammount you get paid will totally depend on how many sundays , free days and nights you work .

Rosters vary from place to place as they are subject to negotiation locally between union reps and the company .

Wether you are relief or resident there will be a pattern so you can work out your days off in advance , if you are a relief then you won't find out what actual shift you are working on the days in question until the Thursday before . Can be a pain planning things for a Rest day after a shift if you pick up a night when the roster is posted

Sundays , if you have sundays in your roster you are committed to work them . You can ask for them to be covered and if cover can be found then you won't have to work it .


A popular one for boxes near me seems to be a 4 week rotation of something like this although this isn't compliant with the 60hour fatigue standard .

Thinking about this and Fennel's query, the only Gr2 Boxes I can think of in the Shrewsbury area are Dorrington, Marshbrook, Onibury and Bromfield.
All 3 of the town Boxes are much higher grade, as are Sutton Bridge and Craven Arms.
(Suuton Bridge due to it being a fringe ERTMS Box, and The Arms as it is the fringe Box for the Central Wales line)
