Vienna to Italy, any route reccomendations

Looking at going this way next month. Looks like a change at Innsbruck if I want to go to Verona, what are the trains like? Railjets?

Yes and Yes....unless you want to take the Nightjet sleeper, in which case you'll need to change at either Venezia Mestre or Padova to reach Verona.

There are also two daytime RJs Vienna to Venice via Klagenfurt and Tarvisio. Change at Venice Mestre for Verona.

It might depend on what scenery you'd most like. Via Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass is attractive. But the Vienna-Klagenfurt route, going via Venice, takes you on the Semmering route from Vienna - which is pretty spectacular / UNESCO-listed [I think] / etc. Are you definitely headed for Verona? (Not that it hasn't got a lot going for it!)

Since Vienna-Verona is easily doable in a day, personally I'd think it a shame to use a sleeper (unless time is of the essence) given the attractiveness of much of the journey; particularly if they're areas you haven't travelled through before.

I realise that a downside of doing Vienna-Verona in the daytime via the Semmering and Venice route is that most journey options tend to be slower and/or with more changes compared to going the other way round.

Another alternative for Vienna - Italy is EC134, the daily through train on the route Vienna - Graz - Ljubljana - Trieste. Between Vienna and Ljubljana it's a portion of EC151. Yes, but that would be a very long way round for the OP to reach Verona!

Yes, but that would be a very long way round for the OP to reach Verona!

Quite a number of Brenner day trains are still loco-hauled classic stock (obviously recognizable from their EC prefix). Fully RJ from sometimes in September, I believe.

Vienna - Innsbruck is all RJ of course.

I second this. If time allows, it's a wonderful way to make the journey. Lunch in the restaurant car, then grab some food in Trieste before hopping on the train to Verona.

I did this in the reverse direction in 2018, depart Franzensfeste 0820, arrive Semmering 1645 ish. Would be quite a long day for Vienna/Verona

Yes - this is an Austria-Italy cross-border link often overlooked ... maybe because it's an east-west connection, not a north-south one. But maybe not the speediest way...
