Two together rail card

Me and the other half have a two together rail card which we use on longer journeys and make good use of, most recently a trip from Wolverhampton to London.

The wife also has an N Network card for her daily commute into Birmingham.

Normally if we travel into Birmingham for an evening out she will will use her N Network card and I will buy a full price ticket.

Anyway, I got thinking. If we were to travel Wolves to Birmingham together could she use her N Network card and could I still benefit from the rail card discount. I have had a look at the Trainline website and can’t see anything that forbids doing this.

Can anyone advise?

Can I use the Two Together Railcard when I am travelling on my own?​

No. The Railcard is for use by you and the second named adult on your Railcard when you are travelling together. The two named cardholders must travel together for the entire journey for their discounted tickets to be valid.

Is this what you are looking to do? You can’t.

To claim 'Two Together' railcard discount, as well as having a valid railcard, you're expected/required to buy two lots of tickets.

INFORMATION.
Discounted price tickets purchased by a Two Together Railcard holder should be issued for travel for the same origin and destination and should normally be of the same ticket type (example both Off-Peak Returns).

Therefore, if your partner already has a travel pass valid for the local journey in question, it'll probably work out cheapest if you were just to purchase an undiscounted ticket for yourself.

Unfortunately you can't use a Two Together Railcard to buy a ticket for just one of the named cardholders, even if the other cardholder already has a ticket that covers the journey. Condition 4.4 of the Railcard terms refers:

4.4. Discounted tickets must be bought for both cardholders at the same time

However, as your wife is an nNetwork season ticket holder, she can buy a £1 "Family & Friends" ticket that allows 1 adult (plus up to 2 children) to travel with her whilst she's using her season ticket - see this page for details. This is available from 09:30 on weekdays, or all day on weekends/Bank Holidays.

This forum is a treasure trove of knowledge. I could have saved a fair few quid over the past couple of years if I had known about the friends and family ticket!

4.4 does not say that both tickets must be on the same railcard. (Good luck arguing that one).

No problem! In all honesty I only found out about it earlier this year, even as someone who held an nNetwork season ticket for several years in the past. I realised that I could join my friend (who is an nNetwork season ticket holder) on the journey to Birmingham for nearly nothing.
