The idea is that people wouldn't own the cars, you'd call one and it would take you where you wanted to go and you would pay for each use. Once you are at your destination the car is then available to be called by another person so you would not need as many cars to exist.
How do you control the cars, physical tracks with signalling?, loops in the road? Sensors/GPS on the cars? Moving GPS isn't that accurate (+/- 5-10m) unless you pay for the high grade signal (public signal is limited, there are encrypted commercial and military signals with higher precision), plus the number of sensors you'd need.
Automation is fine in a controled envionment - add pedestians, animals and other hazards and you might be better off with manual
