Looking at options returning to Cambridge from Castlebar in Ireland. One option takes me to Birmingham at 20.26pm then 05.22am XC to Cambridge. Would have no problem stopping overnight in Birmingham, but would I have to take the next available train so early or could I wait a couple of hours for a later train say 07.22am?

While break of journey is only permitted on route HLYHD IRISHF CIV, as overnight break of journey is allowed if you cannot reasonably complete your journey in one day, and this journey can't be done in one day, there are no issues with what you suggest.

Wouldn't it be restriction 6C, which allows break of journey "on rail leg only"?

In any case, you cannot complete your journey in one day so you're fine to stop off at Birmingham. You must re-commence your journey by 1200 so you're fine to take the later train you suggest.

6C applies to route +HLYHD STENA CIV and if you scroll down further you get BREAK OF JOURNEY: NO. I agree this contradicts what's further up.

National Rail makes no mention of BoJ restrictions (linky) so it's debatable how enforceable it is. In any case, it makes no difference to OP.

Does this not mean a general break of journey as opposed to one out of necessity from needing to make n overnight stop?

It does - it's always allowed to stop off overnight if you can't complete your journey, this doesn't count as breaking your journey:

For the purposes of this Condition and Condition 11, you will be treated as breaking your journey if you leave a Train Company’s or Rail Service Company’s stations after you start your journey other than:

(i) to join a train at another station, or
(ii) to stay in overnight accommodation when you cannot reasonably
complete your journey within one day, or
(iii) to follow any instructions given by a member of a Train Company’s staff.

I suspect this error has crept in at the time break of journey became permitted on SailRail Ireland tickets. It used to be prohibited:

National Fares Manual NFM 02 CD said:
Ticket Code: ECS / ECR
Ticket Class: STANDARD
Ticket Name: ECONOMY SINGLE / RETURN
Out and Return Validity:- DATE ON TICKET ONLY
Break of Journey: NO

but has been allowed since May 2009:

National Fares Manual NFM 05 CD said:
Ticket types ECS and ECR: Outward and Return Travel
Valid on date on ticket only. Valid on Irish Ferries / Stena Line services port to port only. Reservations are compulsory on the ship leg. Break of journey on rail leg only. No unaccompanied children under 16 permitted to travel.

The current edition of The Manual does not contain the 'BREAK OF JOURNEY: NO' words.

Which Ferry are you Planning on Catching, because by looking at timings etc these are the only times that appear :

0727 CastleBar - Cambridge 2258 via Dun Laoghaire,Crewe,London which would be Stena Line Ferry
1327 CastleBar - Cambridge 1101 via Dublin Ferryport, a 4 hour wait in Holyhead, and London. Irish Ferries

Im just saying it can be done in one day.

The 0727 via London is my best option, but the option of going via Birmingham did appear when I first looked and was worthy of consideration, however, I really cannot bear the thought of a 4 hour wait in Holyhead in the early hours!

Few people can, which must be a big disincentive to using the ferry. No doubt it's well filled with cars and lorries though.
