Does anyone know whether it's possible to buy rail tickets online with a Travelcard attached? They usuall give the destination as 'Zones 1.....etc' rather than 'London Terminals' or whichever London station. In a couple of weeks, I need to buy an off-peak day return (with railcard) from Wendover with a Travelcard including Zones 1-5 - is this possible?

Yes you can..

Anytime Day Travelcard Wendover-London Z1-6 £15.50 with railcard
Off Peak Day Travelcard Wendover-London Z1-6 £11.55 with railcard (Minimum Fare £12 if TRAVELLING TOWARDS London b4 10am)

Both Route Chalfont and Latimer

Try with www.eastcoast.co.uk, Put in the From Box Wendover and Then to London z and Scroll/Select U1256, and add railcard you own.

Zone 1-5 Travelcards are only available in seven-day and longer versions. You can get zones 1-6 if you like.

Slight correction to sonic2009, the Y-P Railcard minimum fare is if you are starting your journey before 10am, not arriving in London before 10am. The OP didn't specify what class of railcard he holds; if it's a different type the rules may be different.

The anytime travelcard must be used if you are arriving in London before 10am.

Its slightly odd that the restriction is that way round as it has the effect of penalizing customers that live furthest away. A time restriction based on arrival time would be much more equitable.

If you are referring to the Y-P minimum fare, no, I disagree, firstly it would be impracticable to base it on arrival time and secondly, the longer the distance the less effected you are. On this line, Stoke Mandeville Y-P holding customers are not affected. Wendover customers are charged an extra 45p. Great Missenden is badly affected at £3.60, and anywhere closer to London is better off with a non-discounted ticket.

Yes. That's right. A better way of wording it may be:

  • Anytime Day Travelcard Wendover-London Z1-6 £15.50 with railcard
    Valid any train
  • Off Peak Day Travelcard Wendover-London Z1-6 £11.55 with railcard
Not valid on arrivals into London before 10:00 (NOTE: Minimum fare £12.00 applies if you depart Wendover before 10:00 except during July/August)
Or possibly introducing a third bullet point and separating the £11.55 and £12.00 fares.

This does highlight how absurd our ticketing system is, that the railway are fussing over an additional 45p during 5 days of the week, on 10 months of the year, when someone holds a particular railcard. If that's "simple" I would like to know what ATOC think complicated might look like.

This is what I'm getting which seems OK:

This would be to go on the 0918 from Wendover which seems to be the earliest available for this fare. There don't appear to be any restrictions for return journeys.

What date is this for?

If it's a weekend there are no restrictions.

If it's for July/August there is no Y-P minimum fare.

Yorkie, there is no YP railcard involved, one passenger has a disabled adult railcard, the other a senior railcard.

The senior railcard allows the full discount when the off-peak ticket is valid (my interpretation, see post 6), so I don't see a problem on the 09:18 (or any other train arriving at Marylebone after 10:00.

I believe that the disabled ticket is not time restricted, so that is valid subject to the tickets time restrictions (ie arriving at Marylebone after 10:00).

OK, it looks like the confusion is that sonic2009 may have assumed it was a Y-P railcard (can I request that everyone who has a railcard states the railcard type in the first post please? :)) and the type was not mentioned in the first post. The advice given in post #2 was as if a Y-P railcard was held (with slight confusion over the minimum fare times). To be fair, Y-P railcards are surely the most common so it's not an unreasonable assumption to make.

For Senior/Disabled Railcards, there is no problem getting the full discount on the 0918 train.

I would also suggest that OPs also post the dates of travel to avoid confusion.

Unfortunately our ticketing system is deemed by ATOC to be "simple", which means it's actually very complicated.

In fairness, my original post was simply asking whether it was possible to purchase rail tickets online which had the day travelcard attached, or whether they could only be bought at a station.

No I confirmed he was okay to travel on the 0918 after looking the OP has a disabled railcard
