Apologies if this is in the wrong section, wasn't sure which section was suitable.

I'm currently on 1S25 which is the CS Highlander divert via ECML. Because of the reversal at Wembley, I've been able to chalk off 2x 92s for the price of one but I'm struggling to find the mileage between Euston and Wembley Reception 1-7 and then from Wembley Reception 1-7 to Camden Road Jct. Railmiles does not like it but will work out the mileage between Camden Road Jct and Edinburgh so just wondering if anyone can help me fill in the gaps please?

In the main Caledonian Sleeper thread there‘s an attempt at working it out, it came up last year. Not my specialist subject but it might help you:

Appreciate the link (probably should have posted this in there haha) but I'm not really following the workings. There doesn't appear to be any obvious correlation between the mile start and mile ends and where the start and end points are. Probably just me as I am the same in the sense that this is not something I am even close to be being clued up on - I generally just rely on railmiles

Depending on how accurate you want to be, it will vary slightly if you went on the Reliefs under the WCML, via the High Level Goods past the PRDC or via the Through Sidings directly off the WCML slows to WEFOC.

However with the schedule: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C20730/2024-04-28/detailed#allox_id=0
You can follow the mileages through if you have a reference for the junctions. http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/elrs/_mileages/l/lec1.shtm

The RTT Schedule indicates the train used the Willesden Reliefs from Willesden No.7 Jn into Wembley Yard then the HLG from Wembley Yard to Harlesden Jn where it rejoins the WCML. I'm not sure from RTT if the train went SL-FL at Willesden West London Jn or SL direct to the Reliefs although the total mileage wouldn't be affected by this (although exactly which tracks you used would be).

Old school method: Print off a map and use a length of thread to follow the line.

It doesn't need to be pinpoint. I try to be as accurate as I can but I know full well that this could send you mad if you try to do it to the precise chain!

This is a great link! It's at least allowed me to produce an answer on a rough basis. I'm not asking you to double check or work it out for me but if I said I'd got Euston-->Wembley-->Camden Rd Jct to around 13 miles 38 chains would you (or anybody) say that at least sounded about right?

I need to invest in one of those things we had at school that went round as you walked with it and clicked every metre :D

If you have a Smartphone, maybe download some sort of app that counts distance - start it when you leave Euston and stop it when you arrive at Wembley! Make sure you keep the phone in one place once you start the counter for an accurate result!

Certainly sounds about right. Any greater detail and you'd need to start asking where in the train you were for the total distance covered!

Not a lot of use on board the train though, and you may get some questions if you appeared lineside :D

I'm absolutely not going down that rabbit hole  I'm happy with how I've filled the gaps now so thanks so much for your help

Good morning, good people of the railway fraternity! Thought I would just re-use this thread for my latest request as it falls under the same title I originally used - would anybody be able to advise the mileage between Wembley Reception Sidings 1-7 and Kensal Rise on 1Z53 1748 Hove to Derby from Saturday's BLS charter please? I've used that link posted previously but I am struggling to work it out this time :(

Also, based on the notes in the programme, I have the distance between Chessington South and Chessington Up Sidings as being 39 chains - if someone could confirm that as being somewhere near correct, it would be appreciated as every chain counts :D (answered below so no longer needed)

This might not be quite what you're asking, but yes, it does look (in TrackMaps) like it's some 39 chains from Chessington South station to the very end of the line (which, of course, never did make it to Leatherhead).

Thank you :) I got a bit of an education on that part of the trip as I happened to be sat with someone from the area

I think I have managed to work out rough figures of 10 miles 32 chains between Wembley Rec 1-7 and Kensal Rise - anyone think this looks absurdly incorrect?

North London or Mildmay line
via the Through Sidings directly off the WCML slows to WEFOC.
I’m very confused by this - there are no connections at Sudbury Jn that go straight from the slow lines into the yard - I’m only aware of three routes - High Level Goods, Relief Lines and Up & Down Goods - and all go through the yard, basically.

Hmmm. RailMiles Mileage Engine has it as just over 3 miles via Harlesden Junction and Kensal Green Junction.

That must have been one of the few I didn't try on there as most of the timing points on the RTT schedule don't work on Railmiles. Back to the drawing board on that then :D

Edit: Wait, I didn't realise that covered the full distance from Wembley to Kensal Rise but I've just repeated what you said in Railmiles and it is indeed 3 miles 2 chains. I think my workings out have encompassed a much larger route than what we actually took. This would make much more sense regarding the average speed as well as my working out would have seen us running at 27mph on average from point A to point B and considering most of it is through yards and on low speed through roads, I felt that was a little optimistic :D

Thanks for your help today @Mcr Warrior

I was replying to an enquiry about Euston to Wembley. Either I've got confused between old names or just got the wrong names but it's the route outlined below.

Regarding your latest enquiry: (from http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/elrs/_mileages/b/bok2.shtm)

It's not entirely clear what the mileage for Wembley Reception should be, so I'll Start at Wembley Yard South Jn.
ELRSTART Mileage END Mileage Distance
UHL Wembley Yard South1m62ch JN with WCL1m06ch0m54ch
WCLjn with UHL1m06ch Harlesden Jn1m00ch 0m6ch
KGC Harlesden Jn1m00ch Kensal Green Jn0m00ch 1m00ch
BOK2Kensal Green Jn5m10chKensal Rise 4m41ch0m49ch

It should be noted this is the route via the High Level Goods, i.e. via Railnet Jn, as per the linked RTT schedule.

total distance from Wembley Yard South Jn to Kensal rise is 1m29ch, If my maths is correct.
The distance between the two ends of WEF1 is 1m17ch, so Wembley Receptions 1-7 is approximately 60ch from Wembley Yard South Jn, which makes the total distance from Wembley Reception 1-7 to Kensal Rise 2m09ch.
