Was it a while ago? I flew with them on a return trip Heathrow - Glasgow between the lockdowns in 2020, my license was given a cursory check when I dropped my bag and I did the swish security set up they have at T5.
Is that the ridiculous thing whereby they take photos of everybody passing through - creating a nightmare when you've got a slightly hungry toddler who doesn't want anybody to take a photo?

Found the whole departure/security process at Heathrow a complete nightmare several times and we're now trying to fly from much more pleasant airports such as Bournemouth or Southampton (or anywhere where the security process is actually sensible and geared up to having people pass through rather than robots).

Yes, it worked quite well the one time I've used it at T5; perhaps I was just lucky though!

I suppose I must be unique here in never being on a jet airliner at all in my 73 years ,spent all my vacations in the UK ,apart from a trip to Austria ,by road)but I did have a low level flight in a DC3 from Biggin Hill over London ,which was enjoyable ( and bumpy)
Never been in a jet? By no means am I a massive advocate of flying (unless necessary), but you should experience it once in your life. The roar of the engines and the soaring climb is a triumph of technology and modern life.

They were lucky then. Ryanair have a policy of only allowing passports as ID and this has led to some people being refused boarding. I'm pretty sure the online check in process requires you to enter a passport number, so anyone without one will struggle to check in.

No actually, Ryanair will officially take driving licenses (and other photo ID) on UK domestic flights now but not to ROI. I have flown both from Edinburgh to Newquay and Stansted on my driving license last year no issues.

The conditions have carriage have been updated on their website, but there is a bit about check in that seems to say passport only. The customer service team told me any photo ID for UK domestic is now their policy.

BA have “always” (in recent memory) required ID for checking in bags, but only started mandating it for hand baggage customers as of Sept last year, prior to that it was only advisory.

Unless you're under 16 and travelling with an adult, you are required to show something. I'm pretty sure it's the law for all flights due to potential terrorism risk, rather than an airline policy.
It isn’t the law. When BA started requiring photo ID on domestic flights in September the CAA issued a statement stating “UK aviation security regulations do not require a passenger’s identity to be checked for security purposes prior to boarding a domestic flight, in the same way when travelling within the mainland on a train or bus.”

Ah OK, so essentially just a unspoken rule that got formalised.

Not quite. Prior to 1 Sept the wording was merely a suggestion: “we advise that you carry photographic identification with you when travelling, such as your passport or driving licence.” Whereas now it is quite clear that it is mandatory to provide photo ID.

The wording may have been less formal, but it was clearly regularly requested before that date.

Most of the comments/complaints on other forums and in news articles etc, state that it was never requested if you were travelling hand baggage only. There are numerous comments from frequent flyers who were never requested to present ID. You were only formally requested to present ID if travelling with checked luggage. There were a very small number of examples where biometrics were not available (not at Heathrow) and ID was requested.

In my experience, BA never checked my ID flying domestically prior to their policy change. I would just board with my mobile boarding pass and do the biometric scan at Heathrow. I have had to show my ID since their policy change, every time.

Interestingly, easyJet still don’t seem to routinely ask for ID at the boarding gate in my experience, despite it always being their policy to require it.

Ryanair and Loganair have always asked to see it.

Photo ID is so standard in the USA that I carry photo ID with me all the time so when home in the UK and flying Ryanair, Easyjet etc, I always have it anyway.

Flew on a 777 yesterday for the first time in 5 years. It was on UA from Denver CO to Chicago O'Hare IL. Weird configuration though - in F (I flew economy) some of the seats faced backwards. In economy it was 3-aisle-4-aisle-3. Nice and cosy!

1135 Easyjet Manchester-Milan Malpensa today. A320 Neo.

Security at Manchester was easy as I was after the morning rush, although I did get pulled over for a more thorough search as apparently there was some metal in my leg, so my shoes were x-rayed and my leg security-wanded, but unsurprisingly they didn’t find anything. Lovely flight, I was randomly allocated an aisle seat which is better than being in the middle and it was a pleasant, quick-seeming flight and the onboard Pinot was also very nice.

At Milan we were bussed to a separate customs area (possibly a result of Brexit?), which I don’t remember happening previously. There was a long queue for the few E-gates, so I just walked down the ‘All passports’ queue and had only one person in front of me and didn’t get reprimanded for the sly move. When in Rome eh…

Nothing to do with Brexit. Your plane went on to do a Milan to Lanzarote flight (Schengen-Schengen) so I would imagine it parked at a Schengen gate and then you were bussed to non Schengen arrivals.

I'm doing that route on Monday (1035 from MAN, A321).
The flight is Milan-based, and on Mondays seems to go on to Sharm el Sheikh (non-Schengen) from Milan.
The incoming flight at MAN is always early, but usually leaves anything up to half an hour late.
I see you went via Norfolk, Brussels and Zurich, overflying MXP and coming back via the long path up from the south.
It's more common to overfly Paris and Geneva and approach MXP from the west, but we'll have to see on the day.
I need to find Alibus "Bus Stop 6" at Malpensa T2 for a bus to Domodossola, thanks to the railway being closed at Stresa.
The MXP terminal map is a highly-detailed multi-layered thing which doesn't actually show the bus stop!
Fingers crossed the immigration queue doesn't screw up my connection.
Then up into CH with a Swiss Travel Pass but the weather will be cold and wet...

That’s quite a bus ride ;)
I’d say it was red pen road, but it isn’t :D

Enjoy your flight! Having an aisle seat, I saw very little out of the window, so saw little of the route, but I’ve done it 30+ times now so not missing out. I wasn’t looking for bus stops at MXP, but the rail station was well signed at least.

I’m doing Malpensa-Manchester on the way home again, but with Ryanair this time.

I wonder if they currently have a shortage of planes, as when I flew with them a few weeks ago back from Budapest, I was watching on various online tracking services and they were running loads of empty services, and I can’t believe any airline, let alone an ultra low cost carrier, would do that.

My service back was from Budapest to Gatwick, and when I looked early afternoon the plane had been given a schedule that would have been impossible to meet, yet the airline said my plane (at about 8pm) was still on time. The schedule has the plane flying empty from Katowice to Budapest, then doing a round trip to London, before doing a second round trip to London which would have been mine.

The schedule put in for the empty flight would have meant the first passenger working of the day was late, but they were still saying it was on time, until 4 hours prior, when it was suddenly two hours late. The plane even ended up leaving over an hour late from Katowice.

After that, the delays just snowballed. They even ended up swapping our plane (which was 2 H 50 M late by that point) onto a flight to Luton which was even later than ours, meaning our delay was extended as they had to run a plane empty from somewhere else in Europe!

Despite saying “boarding” on the screens, they even announced a flight to Rome had been cancelled!

They seem to have 40 Minute turnarounds which seems fairly standard for Ryanair and EasyJet, but doesn’t allow for any time to be made up.

Almost every other customer in the food court was paying with WizzAir meal vouchers!
There's some interesting empty flights or at least positioning flights being made most days from UK airports. BHX to MAN for example. Usually it's holiday companies. Shame they're not available to ride!

In the last week

EI3250 - Dublin to Edinburgh 08/06

Aer Lingus A320 in the retro livery , and a refreshed cabin. When I booked it was a turbo-prop so it was good that that was changed, as it was a full flight because of all the Taylor Swift fans travelling over (and a load connecting from the US)

FR5771 - Glasgow to Dublin 09/06

Late as per usual with Ryanair , and in the old-style yellow cabin, but a bog standard flight. Made up time on the way so I was able to catch my Aircoach back.

BA831 - Dublin to London 13/6

ex-BMI A319 , with old, hard slim seats , and was delayed landing in due to ATC restrictions at Heathrow. Fruit shortbread was nice though.

Day trip to Belfast from Edinburgh on the old Ryanair £13.99 specials.

Nothing noteworthy on the flights but it looks like the new scanners are in operation on the fast track security lane at EDI since I was last there

I also flew that route few months back. I wonder how long Ryanair will stay on the route with easyjet on the route.

30 years ago today my mum took my son (then 10) on a trip on Concorde from Manchester around the Bay of Biscay and back. I was not included, so there's a flight I have not been on! Was I bothered - Yes I was.

Just one point - they also take national ID cards for those flights.

Before I arrived at the gate at Shannon Airport for a flight to Manchester recently, I was surprised to hear an annoucement saying the flight was oversold and the first person(s) to offer to move to 'the next available flight' would get 250 Euros plus an overnight hotel and taxi.

It happened to me once when I had no particular hurry to go anywhere. The offer was the same, so I asked about the hotel. They offered something that was in the middle of nowhere, so given the lack of volunteers (Sunday evening flight, next flight on Wednesday), I asked them to make it a hotel next to the beach and they had a deal. After a quick call to their supervisor, they came back with an offer of a 4 star hotel in the town centre that wasn't near the beach. With all meals included, it was a great deal.

I once had a similar situation - call went out for volunteers for denied boarding. Was given €250 on the spot (via a prepaid card IIRC) and it gave me an unexpected chance to see my grandmother, who lived in the city I was flying from.

As it turned out, this would be the very last time I'd see her - so in retrospect I was extremely grateful for the overbooking!

So, as I got out of my seat in Seattle, the lead FA came up to me and said: "Mr Howarth, there is a car waiting for you!". So, I was escorted down the steps onto the tarmac and into a waiting Porsche. The driver took me across the airport taxiways etc and into the back entrance of the Skyclub. He asked me to relax and he would take care of booking me in. I went to the shower attendant in the club, had a shower and changed clothes and then breakfast. Now that is what I call service. Unfortunately, I can't be quite as exciting as that @GRALISTAIR , how did that come about, if you don't mind me enquiring? Some interesting places visited there!

Last night I did Ryanair from Milan to Manchester at 1900, 737/8 operated by the Maltese Ryanair. I've decided that I really like Milan Malpensa, it's one of the few airports that just seems relaxed and civilised. The inbound aircraft was meant to come from Berlin, but it never came and an aircraft was swapped from a Bari arrival instead, so we left with just a minor delay. I stumped up £8 for the last remaining window seat as I suspected there might be some nice views of the Italian Lakes and the alps, and it was £8 well spent, a bonus was the sun setting on the horizon as we approached Manchester. I also had a glass of wine on board, which was nice, but not as nice as Easyjets on the outbound leg. Lovely flight, especially for Ryanair and we arrived in Manchester vaguely on time. At Immigration I got sent to see an officer at the E-gates, but all I got asked was where I'd come from and if I'd had a good time and I was through the whole airport very quickly.
