Anyone happen to know / have noticed when the last day was on which no GWR West trains were cancelled for this reason. Feels like years - which leads me to wonder how long it takes to establish “usual”. Just venting frustration at having to sit in the cold for the second morning running while two successive trains are cancelled - one at short notice since I left home.

The “usual” is determined by the amount of maintenance diagrams. Whilst I can’t speak for the West, here in LTV land, Mon-Fri, we have a total of 8 (3x 165, 3x 387 & 2x HeX 387). Therefore anything stopped above that 8 will be “more than usual“.

That’s a very esoteric use of the word usual. “More than planned for” maybe, but if you plan for 8 and it’s always actually 10 or 11, then 10 or 11 becomes usual and 8 is shown to be inadequate.

I know GWR have used this where a number of the 80x fleet has been stopped for various repairs where, as suggested above, more are in depots awaiting repairs for various faults/damage than the cycled average. Same principle would apply to almost all TOCs and their fleets and sometimes various circumstances combine to mean lesser availability and hence cancellations.
