On a off peak ticket, is Crewe to Nottingham via Tamworth a valid route or is it only the route via Stoke?

There are Off Peak (period) Return tickets from Crewe to Nottingham specifically routed via Tamworth (at £38.20) and also via Stoke-on-Trent (at £43.10).

The Off Peak Day Return fare is seemingly only available when routed via Stoke-on-Trent (at £24.00).

Prices quoted above are before any applicable Railcard discount.

And if you wanted to travel out via one route and back via the other, you could buy a ticket for the cheaper route and obtain a change of route excess for half the difference between the relevant fares.

This excess would be obtainable at any ticket office, or alternatively onboard the train without penalty.

Useful for the OP to know. How should such an excess be correctly priced if the ticket originally held was the Off Peak Day Return (route via Stoke-on-Trent) at £24.00?

It would still be half the differences between the relevant fares, e.g.. half of £38.20 less £24.00

Would doing so, on the return leg, effectively extend the validity of the (day return) ticket beyond its day of issue?

Yes, it would. It converts the return portion to the fare that it is excessed to.
