Every friday I rely on catching a train between Ferriby and Scarborough. Unfortunately on friday the train failed at Doncaster - before it got anywhere near Ferriby.

I gave NR a call and a very nice chappy rang me back within 5 minutes. He told me to get on the next train to Hull, then change to the Bridlington trains and they had a taxi waiting for me to take me on to Scarborough.

He even offered me compensation if I sent in my ticket - however I think that the way they handled my journey was more than recompense enough.

Funnily enough my grandparent-in-laws have had completely the opposite amount of service from XC this week!

Definitely impressed!! They deserve new trains to match their staff performance!
I think it was because I missed the last Scarborough train of the day due to my connection breaking down. He mentioned that they had a duty of care to ensure I got to Scarborough that evening.

Taxi driver even got a phone call en route to Scarborough to make sure he'd picked me up / everything was alright.

Again, top work, Northern.

Northern have fantastic Customer Service/Public Relations from the little experience I've had with them. Back in the summer I fired out e-mails to a load of companies asking about Work Experience and despite my location (Solihull), they are the only ones that got back to me and could not have been nicer.

Did you get any?

And I do have to agree, northern has somehow managed to have the best customer service, punctuality and reliability. Quite amazing considering they have the oldest stock, and no 'prestige' lines, (like a mainline or similar)

Northern are generally pretty good at customer service, the vast majority of their staff are friendly and pleasant. They obviously praise good service with the Northern Stars awards.

However, I have one issue with their customer services, when I've sent in Delay Claims they have sent a free Day Pass which can only be used on their own services. No use if you need to travel with TPE or Virgin (for part of the journey) like I generally have to.

Other TOCs have sent rail travel vouchers, with Virgin generally being the most generous from my experience.

and despite my location (Solihull)

Northerners generally aren't reluctant to relocating for the right job offer, so I imagine most companies based in the North of England will give considering to people from other parts of the country.

I once went for an interview at a company with offices in Rochdale and Rawtenstall (Lancs) which wasn't a particularly large or prestigious company. The interviewer told me that he'd just interviewed someone from Cardiff.

I was offered a place to work in a ticket office, I can't remember where, but Manchester Victoria and Leeds seem to stick out - I think that's what I was offered. I didn't take them up on it in the end, because at the time I was 17 and only doing paper rounds so couldn't afford accommodation. I was told any week that suited me they would be fine with so I delayed it to mid summer, but then I picked up a job outside the rail industry so couldn't really risk leaving that for a week!

The lady who dealt with my enquiry (Helen) was extremely helpful and I was offered a Northern Rail pass for the week to help me out but even that couldn't draw me in because at the time I was on a Staff Pass from my Old Man's work. If I feel that the time is right again soon, I will definitely enquire again, as they dealt with everything so well - so grateful for it!
