Thankfully, Scotland can boast even heavier defeats by even larger margins....o_O

Yes, and presuming you’re referring to the Arbroath 36 - 0 Bon Accord game, interestingly the very same day there was a 35 - 0 scoreline, both in the Scottish Cup

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that because there weren’t goalnets at the time, and the referee was sympathetic to the losing team, significantly less time was played than should have been as the clock wasn’t stopped whilst the ball was retrieved after each goal

Not as impressive score as Mansfield 9 Harrogate 2

I've never seen a 9-2 before. A 10-2, yes but never heard of a 9-2.

10 - 1 Bury beat Skelmersdale couple of weeks ago! Most goals I've seen in a game, previous one was Bolton 6 QPR 4 way back in something like '69/70 ish.

Fortunately I missed West Ham 10 Bury 0 (not sure if Bury didn't score though - I've erased it from my memory!)

That only is for level 9 or higher, park games don't count!

I thankfully missed out on Manchester City 10 - 1 Huddersfield Town in 1987.

I’ve seen Halifax win 8-1, but unfortunately also seen them lose 0-7 twice

Most goals I’ve seen in a game is Town beating Maidenhead 7-4 in the FA cup a couple of years ago
I saw Darlington beat Colchester United 7-3 in November 1993. Just this season we lost 8-0 ( sigh) which I did not see but listened to. It equalled our worst defeat which was an 8-0 loss away to Watford in the league cup in 1987. ( we improved to only lose the second league 3-0)

I should add that one of the 0-7 losses I saw was away at Macclesfield, where the away end was open to elements and it was absolutely lashing down with rain and bloody freezing.

Still stayed till the end though.

I'm 99.9% sure I've never left a match early (can't recall many of the games I go taken to as a small child, so can't guarantee my dad didn't drag me off home at 85 minutes or something)

A year after he was sentenced to prison for firing a gun at a family member, Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been sentenced to 6 years in prison for his part in a drug smuggling ring. He has yet to serve either sentence as he plays in Russia for Spartak Moscow & Russia don’t have an extradition treaty with the Netherlands.

Huddersfield Town 1 - 0 Sunderland

The post-Moore revival continues under interim coach Jon Worthington. Sunderland offered a much sterner test than the previous home game, but were unable to break through the Huddersfield high press. The "Keighley Cannavaro" Matthew Pearson's close range tap-in from a parried Jack Rudoni free kick in the first half meant a first 'double' of the season for Town and leaves the Terriers five points clear of the bottom three. Still a long way to go but it's a step in the right direction, and fans are now excited to go to games again after Darren Moore made it such a chore. The players seem to be enjoying having the shackles taken off too, so if (as is now rumoured) Worthington is to remain in temporary charge until the end of the season it'll at least be entertaining!

One peculiar thing about the game was that due to the newish rule about teams only being allowed three stoppages of play for substitutions, Sunderland had to play the last ten minutes with only ten players on the field due to an injury. Whilst my team benefitted on this occasion I do think this rule change should be reversed. We already rightly have things like the concussion protocol for player safety, but this rule could lead to players staying on the field and suffering an aggravation to an injury to avoid their team being a player short. To me this goes against the idea that player safety should be a priority- the rule was introduced to prevent time-wasting but the way to prevent time-wasting is to ensure that all time for stoppages is added on at the end. Teams can now make five substitutions during the game, it shouldn't matter if they do this at five different times during the game or three, because time-management by the officials should be better. This rule seemingly admits that officials are incapable of doing so.

Highland League

Last night, there were two matches of note for different reasons:-

Banks O'Dee 4 ...Rothes 0
Banks O' Dee are certainly proving a great improvement to the league since they replaced Fort William, the team noted for "rugby--style" match scores, not in their favour,
Their league record shows P23... W16 D6 L1 and are in second place in the league.

Brora Rangers 1 ... Buckie Thistle 5
Up to last night's match. Brora Rangers, one of the stronger teams in the league, had only lost one league match, so a home defeat of that magnitude was something of an "eye-opener".

I saw Leeds beat Lyn Oslo 10-0 in the European Cup in 1968.

That must have been an amazing fixture to be at, on a number of levels.

Totally agree with all this, we don't need new rules we just need existing rules to be enforced. Just book players for timewasting, and don't shy away from doing it a second time when it is actually justified. There's no point having more rules that get patchily enforced and then forgotten about 10 games down the line...

Overheard in the NHS clinic that I attended this morning.....

"Every time that three or more players deliberately harass a match referee after a decision has been made, the referee should immediately show the red card to all the players involved. There should be no appeal allowed against this stricture."

I must say, the lack of respect for the match officials, from pretty much everyone involved in football, is one thing I really dislike.

That would certainly put a stop to it.

Here we go again…

Paris St Germain forward Kylian M’Bappe has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season.

What are the odds on him staying? PSG will offer him a massive contract and he'll be happy again.
Apparently he has a year extension clause on his present contract so could be sold for a transfer fee? This would keep both parties happy!

Hmm, it seems your crystal ball has clouded over somewhat ;)

Huddersfield Town have appointed Andre Breitenreiter as their new manager. (From the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68312298)
Huddersfield Town have appointed former Schalke and FC Zurich boss Andre Breitenreiter as their new head coach.

The 50-year-old German has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and succeeds Darren Moore, who was sacked at the end of January.
Breitenreiter won the Swiss league title with Zurich in the 2021-22 season.

He had previously guided two German clubs, Paderborn and Hannover, to promotion to the Bundesliga.

Breitenreiter departed Hoffenheim in February 2023 after less than a year in charge and will begin his first role in England from Monday.

Caretaker boss Jon Worthington will lead the team on Saturday when the Terriers, who are 20th in the Championship and five points above the relegation zone, host Hull City.

Damn, you beat me to the punch announcing it!

From what I can gather about him, AB seems to be quite the coup for the club, and shows the ambition of the new owner... even though I still think the plan to be in the PL within three years is a bit optimistic. Two promotions in Germany and a league title in Switzerland (with a team that narrowly avoided relegation in the season before he joined and after he left) is a pretty decent CV.

Hopefully he is a bit more successful than your last German manager!

Reports I heard say that the 36th goal had a suspicion of offside :D
Quite possibly, but that would have needed a Linesperson Under 10's or thereabouts in those days didn't usually get anyone.
I only remember the score because it matched the Arbroath / Bon Accord game, which has always been a good quiz question

Not so well known are the two teams who participated in the 35-0 Scottish Cup result played on the very same day.
