Morning all,

On a Saturday what are the usual workings of the GWR 387s?

Is it just the Padding to Didcot Parkway trains ?

Just getting an idea of the usual pattern for them.

Thanks in advance,

Yes, their main area is Padd-Didcot stoppers plus Padd-Newbury & the Newbury-Reading shuttle. On the mainline, I believe they also do:

1A63 0700 Swindon-Padd
1U06 0813 Padd-Bristol PW
1L13 1024 Bristol PW-Padd
1C41 0915 Padd-Swindon
1A66 1025 Swindon-Padd
1C43 1013 Padd-Swindon
1A67 1146 Swindon-Padd
1B14 1213 Padd-Cardiff
1C49 1315 Padd-Swindon
1L23 1442 Cardiff-Padd
1U20 1513 Padd-Bristol PW
1L27 1724 Bristol PW-Padd
1C29 1833 Padd-Swindon
1C40 2013 Padd-Swindon

They seem to work far more frequently to Cardiff than that

Note that those Bristol Parkway/Swindon/Cardiff workings appear to be Mon-Fri, not Saturdays.

How does the Cardiff unit get back then?

I must be blind, sorry  I think it used to be early in the morning before I moved down under.

Monday to Fridays it’s the 0712 off Paddington and 0950 return. On Saturdays it’s the 1213 and 1441 down and up respectively.

The 387s from Swindon were also heavily modified due to the Wales vs Scotland rugby match in Cardiff

Out of interest, how busy typically is the 0712 from Paddington on weekdays? I’m quite tempted by the idea of doing the journey on 387s, but don’t want to do it if it’s likely to be packed.

I haven’t experienced the London end of the journey so I can’t say for sure, but the Swindon to Cardiff leg was pretty dead at least until Newport.

Not very busy like most contra-peak services from Paddington (or London terminals generally) before 0900.

It seems an absolute rip using commuter trains on IC routes with IC prices and no trolley service on the 387s. They should at least offer cheaper pricing to use these services but as nobody complains then I guess they can do it. If it was me having to use any of these services regularly I would certainly be writing to GWR and encouraing others to sign my petitions.

Is there really a difference to an IET though, given how few people use the trolley service, which is a rip off. Only difference is in first class.

Personally I’d be quite happy with a 387 on London to Cardiff were it not for the ironing board seats.

It’s 2+2 seating with tables and a reasonably pleasant interior… perfectly adequate for most journeys on the route. Lack of first class is a pity but then it isn’t advertised on those services.
