I am wondering if the fares Preston - Carlisle (which specify the route via Penrith) are valid on the VT diversions which go via Settle?

I am fairly sure they would be but I am just looking for confirmation. Thanks.

If it is valid on the original undisrupted service, I can't see why it wouldn't be valid on the diverted service.

The routeing guide List of Easements contains No. 10009 "During engineering works when trains from or via Preston are diverted via Blackburn, Hellifield, Settle and Appleby to or via Carlisle, this will be a permitted route. This easement applies in both directions", which would appear to cover it even though it is very vaguely worded. Perhaps "from or via" means "routed". That is quite an old easement. It seems to me the more recent ones are less afraid of using the word "routed" and hence are clearer in what they mean.

Tickets must be accepted on diverted services. How is the average punter going to know whether the diverted service would be going through Penrith or not? It would be totally unenforceable if Virgin turned around and said that Route Penrith tickets were not valid on diverted services. What do they expect the passengers to do when there are no trains running in that section?

I think the easement above also covers it.

There is also the option of a replacement bus which does go via Penrith. However, I expected it to be fully valid, I was just double checking! ;)

I *thought* I remembered that the routing options were "any permitted" and "not Penrith" there (happy to be corrected)

Penrith and Any Permitted both available.

Route Penrith offers 2T (nominal restriction) SVR for 20p less.

Doing the journey now on a very quiet and pleasant double 10 car super voyager. I think the guard is in the rear set, as there hasn't been a ticket check in the front set. The route is as spectacular as ever, despite the dreary weather!

Hi West Coast, any idea which Super Voyagers are forming your service? Thanks :)

Edit: Judging by you mentioning no ticket check (making me think you've probably been on it a while), probably 221115 /221112 on the Euston run, 14:18 ex Carlisle.

You were absolutely correct! :D .

It was the 10.52 departure from Edinburgh, arriving into London Euston at 19.14 - a marathon 8 hours and 22 minutes

It went via the Glasgow South Western Line (Dumfries) and the Settle & Carlisle Line. All I can say is that it was lightly loaded!

Very pleasant journey, it definitely makes a difference when you can stretch out..

You must be suffering from a surfeit of panoramic scenery on the route you have described. It sounds just like an excellant railtour...shame there was no double-headed steam to really complete the picture:D

I only travelled Carlisle - Preston but I'd be interested to know if anyone did the full journey?!

Just a random tip if you travel on Voyagers. Wifi is not charged for in Coach D or L (if it's a double) as it's a hybrid first class coach....I'm sure this has been posted before though!

I did the Preston to Edinburgh/Edinburgh to London/ London to Preston on 2nd April (first day of diversions), and loved it. :D

First Class was very quiet on the way up to Edinburgh, I was alone Edinburgh to Glasgow, but it got quite busy Glasgow to Preston. It then got very quiet Preston to Euston.

I was in the same Super Voyager First Class coach all day, but noticed that reserved coach E was very busy, when I looked at Carlisle and Preston- probably because people wanted to sit in 'their' seat.

I think people have got to know about that one, plus it's got the comfy seats and tables which means it becomes busy quite easily, while the extremities of the train are quieter (but that could go for many services I suppose).

Is it all Super Voyagers on diversions or are there any Pendolino drags as has happened in the past?

Sorry, I should've mentioned that there have been some Pendo drags recently via Manchester, and also the odd one or two over the Glasgow South Western. None via the S&C though.

Ive done Euston to Glasgow via Brum, S&C, and GSW, then back the next day, but just via S&C on return. But that was back in the days of good old loco haulage. I wouldnt do it now with the voyagers.
