I am trying to find out the current situation of unit, 802207, did this unit ever make it back into passenger service following its derailment in March 2022? (https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/heaton-derailment-22-03-22.229511/).
If not, does anyone know the plans/likely return date for this unit?
According to trainlogger, a couple of vehicles are at Long Marston, in the Chrysalis shed, and the others are at Newton Aycliffe. Still being repaired as far as I can tell.

4 coaches of the unit currently sat outside in the yard at Newton Aycliffe, the damaged cab end is u accounted for, last reported at Long Marston.

Does the commentary above suggest that four coaches are intact but that the driving car requires repair(s)? Why has it been taken to Long Marston in isolation? Is it simply that the insurance assessors have inspected it and it’s waiting its turn at Wolverton? I don’t know how these procedures work.

2 coaches were taken to Long Marston and were sighted by myself there in May, they were there for Insurance Assessment.

I don’t know if the 2nd coach had repair work completed there or maybe back at Newton Aycliffe, but it is now coupled to the 3 undamaged coaches.

Who says it has to go Wolverton?

Some have had repairs in Derby at a company called Millennium.

I’m surprised it hasn’t actually been sent to Eastleigh for repair, as Hitachi could have put it through its project “ACER” then as well as facilitated the repairs.

They only have 2 (I think) roads at Eastleigh, they will have units booked in, in a certain order, and that is based on the depth of the cracks. There will be other priority units, and I believe is already 2 units there.

Who ever has put the numbers back on to what was the damaged carriage has put carriage number where unit number should be, so looks like it’s numbered 831207 at one end, the other end is correct 802207.

Two pictures attached from a YouTube video, link also included below

Just to clarify, which 80x fleets require the crack repairs? GWR/LNER/TPE, any others?

Reported elsewhere that it’s being fitted with a battery module for trial purposes and that it’ll not return to traffic until December 2024.
And the relevant section from the article -

Battery power trial

Meanwhile, the Class 802 trainset which was damaged in a shunting accident in March 2022 remains out of traffic. Although No 802 207 has now been repaired, it will not be returning to service yet, as it is receiving modifications for use as a battery testbed.

This will see a 6 m long, 2·2 m wide battery module installed in place of one of the existing engines, which will improve fuel efficiency by using two diesel powerpacks rather than three.

The battery module will provide top-up power for peak demand and give regenerative braking capability when operating in diesel mode, which the trains currently do not have. Arrival and departure at stations is also to be trialled in battery mode to assess noise and air-quality improvements. The train is planned to re-enter traffic in December.

‘We’re supplying that unit to support what we think is a sensible industry scheme to look at whether we can do something to move from bi-mode to tri-mode, which could be beneficial for the industry from a green perspective’, Jackson confirms.

After many months at Hitachi’s Merchant Park facility, after returning there from repairs caused by its derailment at Heaton, 802207 left merchant park on Tuesday 27th August running ecs to Doncaster IEP.

The unit has had batteries installed on the centre vehicle, and had done some testing within Hitachi’s factory.

Today’s move was the first on the mainline with batteries fitted to the unit. (Believed to of moved on diesel and electric power).

Looking at RTT, it appears to be currently operating over night test runs between Doncaster IEP depot and York/Darlington, before finishing at Merchant Park Wednesday Am.

The unit is now also wearing a vinyl on at least one carriage stating ‘Charged for the future’.

I’ve attached a picture taken from the 8XX Appreciation Group on Facebook.

I'm assuming that it's running as 5Q09 then.

It’s the only thing that I could think would be working it, especially when the paths finish back at Merchant Park this morning.

The battery pack is capable of delivering 700kW peak*, the same as a diesel power pack.

I can't find the kWh size of the battery though. Anyone know? With an Azuma doing 0-125 in 4.5 minutes, I'm guessing a minimum of 60kWh if the battery is exhausted on each station cycle.

All I know is the battery is recharged whilst train is on OHL power. And also whilst the train is braking.

Is this one of the first Tri Powered IET units?
No. Purely for testing/evaluation of battery operation by Hitachi.
Batteries will be removed soon, and unit returned to TPE for use from December timetable.

Is it possible to change the thread title to something more descriptive? E.g. "802207 Hitachi testing battery power for Transpennine"

Seems bizarre to add a special vinyl when they're going to remove the batteries so quickly after just test runs (lots overnight), and never use it in service.

It’s going to go across the TPE network, it’s been a project which has been testing for several months, full project is about 6 months, maybe longer?
If Hitachi want to put a vinyl on, why not?
