It’s a directional sign that has a white arrow pointing towards the ticket gates

Rail replacement at Leeds is currently managed by entering the main ticket gates, heading up the footbridge, exiting the southern gates, down the escalators, walking under the station and pick up point is outside Hilton Leeds

Surely that only works during the day when the south entrance is open, it closes around 10pm so I wonder how it works on a evening.

It really is hard to imagine a less passenger friendly route. Have they remembered that a key means of getting repeat business is the passenger having an unstressful experience?

Given the huge roadworks going on around the station do you have a better suggestion of how it could be done?

Probably the best idea would have been to arrange to use a couple of bus stands at the City Square end of Boar Lane, then the main route to them could have been through the North concourse and through City Square.

Was it the 2232? In the end another set was found and went 22 late as a 4 car 195.

That's good. I probably should have hung around a bit longer in that case.

I don't think the location's too bad, given the circumstances, however, a few more arrows to the stop would have been helpful.

Yes according to the log these were the only available units as the rest were due on maintenance affected by Sunday’s Neville Hill block so lots of work went on in the background to get everyone home by train.

What time did it actually go out, out of interest ?

22.54 as per the RTT screenshot. Control were looking for a set step up as soon as the problem started to manifest.
Anyone could have told Northern exactly what was going to happen so it's not as if the problem suddenly started to manifest. With no trains to Wakefield Westgate, the Deane Valley line shut, Leeds United at home and the usual Saturday night revellers it must have been obvious that running dinky little 2-car 195s all evening would lead to overcrowding.

So in other words the arrow is next to useless?
It’s not next to useless as the arrow does point in the right direction, However I will admit there were more signs present directing the way within the station that seem to have been removed/taken down (at least in the day time - I can’t speak for the night when the TPRU RRB buses have largely operated).

Leeds have also been placing a white board of instructions out to passengers of the route either before or after the main Gateline

The green signs used are TPRU signs so wether or not they use them for other route closures
Surely that only works during the day when the south entrance is open, it closes around 10pm so I wonder how it works on an evening.
It’s extended opened times when this takes place, potentially as exit only (although I can’t comment on that)

It’s not the best route, but it is the best route under the circumstances of the entire front of the station being closed. Even City Square currently has some small element of construction work taking place.

The directions could be better, but: when you come off the escalator from P16 there's a green sign with a right-arrow. If you're not payng attention, you don't see the next sign which has a left-arrow on the lift opposite the next escalator for P15. The arrows are correct, just the signs that need to be more obvious. Perhaps some floor markings instead?

See earlier comment I made re Wellington Street. Originally they were going to be outside the Majestyk, before the proposed one-way system was reversed.

They could pick up from outside The Queens. I saw a car drive past there yesterday; it was able to escape because one of the barriers towards Wellington Street wasn't in place but I have no idea how it got around the planter at the top of Bishopgate Street without driving on the cycle path. Alternatively, keep New Station Street open only for rail replacement buses, and blocked off the rest of the time.

I'm not sure you could use New Station Street as the construction area surrounds the exit road to City Square, so buses would have to somehow turn around and head back to Boar Lane. Plus the section closest to Boar Lane is being re-laid as a semi-pedestrian configuration, and pedestrians have to walk on part of the roadway during the works which would make it dangerous to run buses along.

The two stands at the City Square end of Boar Lane are really the closest to the station that don't involve trekking through the active station or all the way around the construction works to the Hilton. Failing that the stands along Wellington Street would be likely the next nearest.

I should have made clear that I meant after the work has finished. Apart from that, you're right - the pavement on the left as you go up New Station street is being widened. This seems a little odd, as the bars are on the right-hand side. Mine not to wonder why... The Boar Lane stops are too heavily used by regular services for rail replacement (as is the one on Neville Street now, tbf), putting them behind the new loading bay on Wellington Street makes more sense. Huddersfield has a similar RRB trek, for some reason they don't use the former FreeTownBus stop.

Lack of signage has reminded me that late last year while walking to one of the pubs under the arches with a colleague, we met someone who wanted to know how to get into the station. If people can't even see the illuminated Southern Entrance entrance, I take the point that they might never find the replacement bus stop (and we did check that they just wanted to catch a train, not visit Boots, Smiths or the ticket office).
