I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a fun or I usual route from Glasgow or Edinburgh to London. Looking for a day time train. Was hoping to do something like Glasgow Sheffield St Pancras as I haven't been on EMR for years

Open to suggestions!

Glasgow-Manchester-Sheffield-London would give you the option of travelling along the scenic Hope Valley route.

How about Edinburgh - Newcastle - Carlise - Leeds - Sheffield - London?
Not a valid route on a through ticket unfortunately. Firstly, the route between Newcastle and Carlisle isn't on any permitted route between Edinburgh and London.

Moreover, although travel is permitted via either the WCML, ECML or MML, these each fall under different permitted maps or map combinations and you can't (or rather, you're not supposed to) switch between these mid-journey.

Any routing is of course possible with split ticketing, and the forum's ticketing site or Trainsplit will allow multiple via points to be used!

If it was me, I would consider

Edinburgh - Newcastle - Carlisle - Leeds - Sheffield - London
Glasgow - Manchester - Newport - Paddington ensuring you catch a loco hauled TfW diagram from Manchester

What isn't clear is whether @Sealink is looking to make a day return trip or happy to spend the whole day travelling to London.

09:06 Glasgow to Manchester direct arrives at 12:28. Realtimetrains shows the 13:30 departure for Newport as a class 197 and the 14:30 as loco-hauled. That arrives in Newport at 17:30, which would make a 19:44 arrival into Paddington.

You might as well do 10:38 Glasgow to Preston, 13:18 Preston to Crewe and pick up the Newport train there at 15:10, unless you especially want to travel via Bolton and Wilmslow.

Presume split tickets would definitely be required to travel from Central Scotland to London via Newport (South Wales). Other than using an ALR, how best to do this without the ticketing becoming ruinously expensive?

I've done Cambridge to Manchester via Paddington and Newport in recent months, as well as Cambridge to Coventry via Waterloo, Westbury, Bristol, Newport, Hereford and Birmingham and the combination of advances available were actually very affordable, little more than Avanti wanted for the sensible routes anyway!

Using the domestic validity of an Interrail pass, I'd suggest!

Thank you everyone for your answers.

Sad to say, I've opted for the seated sleeper to London from Inverness, purely based on price.

Yep.

I'd go Glasgow - Kilmarnock - Carlisle - Barrow - Carnforth - Leeds - Sheffield - Birmingham - High Wycombe - London.
