I'm interested on as I have a trip in am and pm first class.

Just wondering what the difference between them and the food options

Wonder if Euston is Birmingham New Street would have a cooked breakfast

Usually the lighter breakfast menu on the West Midlands trains, whilst the Liverpool, Manchester and Scottish (inc via the Midlands) services usually get the full service.

I've always gotten full service, sometimes certain items weren't available but there didn't seem to be a distinction between "larger" and "smaller" dishes even late at night such as the 22:00 to Liverpool.

It's quite instructive to look at the calorie counts in those menus. The "hearty dish" breakfast hash is 202kcal, while the "larger plate" beef ragu is 332kcal. If you look at say a pub menu, most of the starters will be more filling than those.

For comparison, Wetherspoons' middle-size veggie breakfast is 861kcal, while their beef lasagne is 761kcal with a salad (or 1295kcal with chips!).

My experience of Avanti complimentary meals is that they're more an airline-style snack than a full meal.

The Full LNER breakfast's 576 kcal, as well as first class advance tickets for LNER generally being more available and significantly cheaper than on Avanti in my experience.

LNER also manage to do a much better attempt at hot gluten free, vegetarian & vegan options than the token "salad"/"a toasted sandwich" that Avanti offer. Clear they put a bit more effort into it.

With that said, I've had some pretty good service in 1st on Avanti, including multiple servings of the items they offer and more than a few of the ciders.

It’s a shame, as I personally always thought Virgin Trains (West Coast) had the best first class in the UK, but Avanti have really run it down, in terms of a crappy menu with limited, largely cold options, overinflated prices, and from 4 spacious carriages to 1 to 2 very cramped ones.

Virgin West Coast did particularly well at breakfast, but beyond that I don’t think the Avanti offering is that different in terms of what you get. The Virgin evening meals were small portions, as they are now under Avanti and the all-day offering was pretty minimal under Virgin too, with them introducing the pathetic ‘snack box’ type offerings. I agree that the price is the main difference and it does seem hardly worth it these days. I have got an upcoming first class journey with them just to see what they are like on a longer journey and to see if the service has improved with the price although I suspect it hasn’t!

They do, but from my experience of using them, the staff have only been offering up the lighter menu on many services due to staffing / time constraints.

Only had the full menu offered once in 8 journeys over the past 4 months.
