Barrier use at Banbury Station

Over the last couple of years, I’ve been commuting a couple of times a week from Banbury to Birmingham. Normally in the mornings there was a 50/50 chance of the barriers being in use, but in the evenings it was rare. However, since new year, every evening the barriers have been in use, with a couple of private security peeps alongside the Chiltern staff.

I was wondering if anyone knew why? Are Chiltern having a new year fare dodger crackdown? Is it just Banbury, or are other stations also having crackdowns?

Same at Leamington Spa, previously late at night it would be unstaffed with barriers open, now it seems to keep staff around and barriers in use. Warwick Parkway has never had barriers so I wonder if it is something to do with XC services.

I have noticed this too.
The lack of proper/consistent revenue enforcement was fed back to Chiltern management at a stakeholder meeting I attended last year, so it's possibly this has been taken onboard.

For the first time ever, there was a double ticket check on the train between Banbury and Birmingham this morning. Normally, there is a ticket check after the train leaves Banbury and that's it. Today there was a check leaving Banbury, and another one past Leamington/Warwick.

Given the revenue pressures, it’s hardly surprising if pressure has been brought to bear for a crackdown.

Most likely trying to catch those passengers whom only pay when challenged knowing the barriers will be wide open and they are going to/coming from a station which hasn't got barriers (or are simply short faring)
