Another ticketing question.

You are given the following ticket choices

First Anytime Return
First Anytime Travelcard

On a ticket into London Terminals

Does the First Anytime Travelcard ticket allow travel within the travelcard zones on any trains in 1st Class?

Just wondering this as you cannot actually get a First Class Travelcard I do not think (although I remember seeing it in a machine somewhere)

I would definitely pick the travelcard, as you would then be able to use any trains within the zones specified. However... I don't know if the first class is valid on just the train that you take to get into/back out of the zones, or every train in the zones as well...

Edit:

See the ticket restrictions here. "You must travel in the class of accommodation shown on your ticket." So you *MUST* travel in First Class, apparently... who knows what happens if you're on a tube train, where IS the first class?

First Anytime Travelcards are valid in first class on all services in the zones you have purchased.

Apart from FCC across London most trains will not have first class on them (i.e. tubes and busses) but many do for shorter trips like Waterloo to Clapham Junction, Kings Cross to Finsbury Park etc.

Go to the TFL website for all zone boundaries.

For what it's worth, and it will depend on what you are doing, but when going to London I buy a first return to Kings Cross and a zone 1&2 TC. This is more expensive than a STD TC but cheaper than a FC TC (based on peak times).

There are no First Class day Travelcards, but you can buy First Class Travelcards for between 1 week and 1 year.

Basically, they are a First Class season ticket (printed in the form of a Travelcard) between the station you buy it at and London Zones 0-0.

For example, if you want a Zones 1-3 First Class Travelcard, you can buy it any station (NR or TFL) within Zones 1-3, such as Euston, Oxford Circus, Waterloo, or Wimbledon. A 7 day Zones 1-3 First Class Travelcard costs £48.30, and is the same price no matter which station you buy it from.

They work in the same way as Season Tickets, in that the longer the validity period, the cheaper it gets. For example, a Zones 1-3 52 week First Class Travelcard costs £1932 (whereas it would cost £2511.60 if you bought a 7 Day Travelcard 52 times).

You cannot, however, buy a Zones 1-3 Travelcard from any station outside these zones (such as Richmond - Zone 4). You can, however, buy any combination of Zones, such as Zones 2-4, 2-5, or 3-4.

You can only buy a Zones 2-4 7 Day Travelcard (costing £34.20) from any station within Zones 2-4 (such as Wimbledon or Richmond). You would not be able to buy it from any station within Zone 1 (such as Euston) or Zones 5-6.

I hope this makes it clearer! I've got to admit First Class Travelcards are not well publicised.

If you want fares for any other combination of Zones, just post another message.

Do you mean one cannot buy a Zones 1-3 TCD from Richmond ticket office, or do you mean that the origin has to be within the zones specified?

By the way, have you just changed your username? I swear it was something different a minute ago.

I think they mean you can't buy a zone 1-3 from a station in zone 4, 5, or 6.

I think the change in user name might be to alleviate some confusion.

I assume Mojo has just changed it! :D

I assume that it's physically possible to issue a Zones 1-3 Travelcard from the Richmond ticket office, but they wouldn't be able to issue an actual "Richmond to Zones 1-3 Travelcard", since Richmond is in Zone 4. They'd have to issue a "Euston to Zones 1-3" Travelcard, for example, instead. It should be possible, as I believe ticket offices can sell all season tickets (aka Travelcards) listed in Avantix - not just ones from their own station.

Thanks guys, you have helped make me understand some bases on the travelcard and avaliability of them etc.

I think South West Trains website does not make it clear weather its Z1-Z2 or Z1-Z6 when travelling on this ticket.

The ticket is a Reading - London Waterloo Anytime First Travelcard.

I am just seeking some sort of clarification that when travelling say Kings Cross - Finsbury Park (BOTH in the travelcard zone) you can sit in 1st Class. It doesn't specify any zones or class travel when travelling within the travelcard zones.

Still slightly confused, sorry.

Would have to check Avantix to be certain but I think outboundary Travelcards are now issued to zones 1-6 only. The zones will be printed on the ticket; there will not be a "Reading to London Waterloo" on it if it's a Travelcard; it'll be "Between Reading * & London Zones 1-6" (and perhaps Route ASCOT).

If travelling within the Travelcard zones with a first class Travelcard, you can sit in first class. The chance of being inspected of course is minuscule.

It is an out-boundary travelcard so will be Zones 1-6.
First class within the validity.

Island got there before me.

(edit: beaten to my other points by island and bb21!)

Assuming it's priced £84.50, it's a Reading - London Terminals (route Any Permitted) ticket, not only to Waterloo. It's priced by FGW, so there's quite a hefty mark-up for 1st class (which is very much nicer on FGW compared to SWT) - you'd not be getting very good value using it on the Waterloo route IMO.

There is another way.
If there is no 1st class Travelcard ticket and you are only travelling 1st class into and out of London on the same route and do not require 1st on any other services in zones 1-6 then you can:

Buy a standard travelcard anytime or off-peak, depending on time of travel, then add an excess from std class return to 1st class return to your London destination and return point.

As far as I remember this is how Gatwick Express issue 1st Class Off Peak Day Travelcards Any Permitted as no such ticket exists.

And you wonder why us ticket office clerks are either slightly mad or make the odd genuine occasional mistake!
