Hi All,

I've just been reading a thread from June 2009 which I found after a Google search from the Irish Rail / LUL thread.

Anyway - just out of general curiosity, is it possible to still buy tickets hand have them issued on RSP4407 stock?

If so, where?

Thanks.

Probably most common on Merseyrail. They are very regularly used by Ticket Inspectors (RPIs) to sell tickets to people who have a genuine reason for not buying a ticket rather than a PF. They will sell tickets to all destinations, so long as they can get the price, (usually ring a station for long distance ones).
All booking offices on Merseyrail also stock them and they are used when the STAR TIS fails or when additional ticket retail staff are required (e.g. Grand National).

FGW/XC irrc have them on-board in case Avantix fails.

(Btw 4407 is used by Merseyrail only, 4408 everywhere else I think).

How does one use a card in conjunction with these manually issued tickets?

The RPI/Retailer rings up a designated station, in Merseyrail case, Liverpool Lime Street (Low Level) where they have a machine where you type in the card number and security code, expiry date etc and get authorisation from bank.

I expect one doesn't! If the circumstances are such that they are being used, it is probably likely that facilities to accept cards aren't available either.

I remember buying a ticket on an excess pad with a card from a guard on a slam door train on the Brighton Line around 10 years ago and he merely wrote my card number on the back of his copy.

If memory serves, the difference between the two is that 4407s are issued on-train, whereas 4408s are issued at stations (though it could be the other way round).

A well-timed 440x comes in handy in numerous situations (usually to correct someone else's mistake), just a shame they're not more widely held these days.

Cheers,

Barry
