Passengers should not enter the yellow box / markings.

There are some other places with similar markings.

I am rather curious as to why there are seemingly arbitrary restrictions on the ends of platforms. Some platforms also have the "passengers must not cross this line/point" signs a good few metres from the end of the platform as well. There's some cases where the reason is rather obvious (e.g. disused length of platform, bad condition, signalling equipment) but there's seemingly nothing in this case?

Even where signs are provided, some stations still aren't happy with you going to the ends of platforms (even when there are trains that stop that far down). I've been confronted by swarms of concerned staff members at two stations - once when walking up and down the platform on a cold day waiting for a train, and once whilst waiting for a train, fully adhering to and quite a distance from the "passengers must not pass this point" signs.

Likely there was something about your behaviour that made them concerned for welfare. Eg were you standing around watching trains pass, without being an obvious spotter/photter? Or standing at an unusual place on the platform?

It’s better that staff always err on the side of caution with this kind of thing (especially at this time of year :( ).

The ends & edges of platforms in general seem super unclear, but this has to be the silliest I've seen, only guess would be that anything there might get in the way of the gate open

So why not move the fence/gate further in?
That would be shortening the available length of the platform. The hatching usually means “don’t hang around here getting in the way” not “do not use at all”

I'm assuming there was a DOO screen here at some time, and anyone standing there would block the driver's view of it. You sometimes see them around Train Ready To Start and Right Away buttons, which platform staff need to be able to get to.

I recently noticed this yellow square at the end of a station platform and wondered if it meant anything? View attachment 149970
There's a gate in the fence. I assume it opens towards the platform. So they don't want you to stand there and risk being knocked over by the gate and potentially onto the line. Sounds daft or rather far fetched but I bet a risk assessment identifed that risk and the yellow box shows that the operator has mitigated that risk.

Looking at the bolt and hinges, it looks to me that the gate opens away from the platform.
