Listings for Aberdeen and Manchester would also be useful, if you have access to the relevant info.

Has the potential to be a great resource - it might be useful however if you advise how people buy these tickets, some of them for example are only avaliable if you buy a smartcard in advance, or pay in cash.

For Aberdeen

£4.00 single or £4.90 day ticket (covers all of Aberdeen City) or £7.60 return (valid for 28 days):

Take the Stagecoach 727 public bus from outside the airport terminal to central Aberdeen (also runs past the majority of airport hotels). There is no premium fare from the airport and no benefit to walking further afield.

Manchester Airport doesn't surcharge for public transport use, no premium fares are charged on either train, bus or Metrolink. Normal operator, TfGM & ENCTS passes & day tickets are valid too.

Liverpool Airport doesn't surcharge for public transport use either, no premium fares are charged. Arriva, Merseytravel & ENCTS passes & day tickets are valid on all buses (Arriva operate all the bus routes to Liverpool Airport), even valid on the express 500.

The thread title is a misnomer as these charges for premium transportation services are not taxes (compulsory payments levied by governments) and in many cases they are not surcharges (additional payments on something that you were already purchasing - the local transport option is often completely different).

Has the potential to be a great resource - it might be useful however if you advise how people buy these tickets, some of them for example are only avaliable if you buy a smartcard in advance, or pay in cash.

Also, each option only lists the travel time of individual legs. But the local transport option may operate at a lower frequency, or at limited times during the day - sometimes better and sometimes worse than the premium option. If multiple changes are required the waiting time can add up which may make the premium option not so bad after all.

Furthermore, the premium options often offer discounts (including for group travel) which should be mentioned for completeness.

5 euro single on TEC A1 from Charleroi Gare Sud (the main station) to the Airport (taking 20 minutes), or 2.10 euro single for TEC 68 from Gare Sud to stop La Folie in Heppinges (a suburb of Charleroi, 25 mins out), from which it is approx a 20. min walk from the stop via Rue de Heppinges and a signed foot entrance into the airport.

Also at Glasgow Airport, you can take a 757 McGills bus from Glasgow Airport to Paisley Gilmour St station (£2.50 fare single, 20 mins) and then a train from Paisley Gilmour St into Glasgow Central (approx. 12 mins, £4.20 in the peaks and off-peak Railcard discounts are available).

A great idea.. however the Gatwick option to use the SL6 is not going to be very useful, the last northbound departure is at 830am and it only runs on weekdays

The suggested route is not possible anyway, not for £1.75. Neither the 405 nor the SL6 stop at East Croydon - the 405 ends at Park St and the SL6 starts at West Croydon, which are at least 10 minutes walk apart. The hopper fare lasts 62 minutes. The 405 takes longer than 52 minutes to get to Croydon (and that requires an SL6 to be boarding just as you arrive at West Croydon breathless), except for the 0600 departure, which requires departing Gatwick on the 100 at 0525.

The first flight into Gatwick arrives at 0555, optimistically you could catch the 100 at 0640, followed by the 405 at 0723 which gets into Croydon at 0828 so you'd miss the last SL6.

Also the 100 accepts contactless tap on / tap off (I got charged £1.90 when I took it from Redhill to Gatwick), a cash paper ticket is not needed.

For Luton Airport - What is the walk like? I know airports don't like you walking and prefer you to pay them to transport you somewhere by not having footpaths etc. But when you are driving between the two it doesn't look very walker friendly. Google is showing a 31 minute walk, so i assume it is all on a footpath. Does anyone know if it is signed? I believe the buses still offer the service for £2, but are less frequent now as they are going elsewhere.

The bus is reasonably frequent, I don't think anything changed because of the DART opening: https://bustimes.org/services/a-church-street-to-airport-bus-station

The walk is uphill towards the airport, yes on a footpath, I wouldn't do it unless I was ridiculously early for my flight or I only had a backpack.

Thank you - I know some people coming through the airport heading into London so I will point them to the bus again to get to the station. This was a very useful thread. The other option I suggested to get them to Central London is the bus all the way (Either National Express or Greenline) if time isn't critical for them.

Bus 119 to Nadrazi Veleslavin (terminus) thence Metro into City Centre.
Plenty of other options depending on where in the City you’re heading.

Listings for Aberdeen and Manchester would also be useful, if you have access to the relevant info.
My main aim is to cover airports that have some expensive surcharge on public transport. Aberdeen and Manchester do not. If i include every airport then the list will be never ending. So i am focuding just on airports with expensive surcharges on some of their public transport.

Has the potential to be a great resource - it might be useful however if you advise how people buy these tickets, some of them for example are only avaliable if you buy a smartcard in advance, or pay in cash.
Many thanks. Yes that is a good idea. I will go through and add details to the ones that can only be purchased with a certain method. I have added a few details already about the ones in Australia and New Zealand which require a snartcard. I will go through the list over the next few days and try and make it clearer especially when only a certain payment method can be used.

For those that really want to save money there is also the First Bus route 27K which stops at a bus stop a five minute walk from the terminal. This is slightly cheaper at £3.05 Single or £4.70 Return or £5.10 Day but it only runs a few times a day. So it is probably best to just get the 727 which is fairly good value and the same price as other Stagecoach routes for the same distance.

Luckily the majority of our airports in the UK do not have these public transport surcharges.

The following airports have no surcharge:

Aberdeen Airport
Belfast City Airport
Birmingham Airport
Bournemouth Airport
Cardiff Airport
East Midlands Airport
Exeter Airport
Humberside Airport
Inverness Airport
Leeds Bradford Airport
Liverpool Airport
London City Airport
London Southend Airport
Manchester Airport
Newcastle Airport
Newquay Airport
Norwich Airport
Southampton Airport
Teesside Airport

The following airports do have some surcharge:

Belfast International Airport
Bristol Airport
Edinburgh Airport
Glasgow Airport
London Gatwick Airport
London Heathrow Airport
London Luton Airport
London Stansted Airport

I have included all of these except Belfast International Airport on the list. Belfast is impossible to avoid the £8.50 Single or £12.50 Return bus. You can go the long way and use local buses to Antrim or Lisburn and then the train or other local buses but that ends up costing more than the expensive airport bus.

The thread title is a misnomer as these charges for premium transportation services are not taxes (compulsory payments levied by governments) and in many cases they are not surcharges (additional payments on something that you were already purchasing - the local transport option is often completely different).

Yes i suppose technically some of them are not taxes or surcharges. It is just a case of public transport companies profiteering as they know that they can get away with charging more for airport services. But i just did not know what other term to use.

Paris Orly:

T7 tram to Villejuif, 7 metro to city center: €4.30 (two standard t+ tickets - no free transfer from the tram to the metro)
Orlyval to Antony, RER Antony to city center: €14.20
Many thanks. I have added the Orly Airport details. I have also added details for Charles De Gaulle Airport too.

Brussels South Charleroi Airport -
5 euro single on TEC A1 from Charleroi Gare Sud (the main station) to the Airport (taking 20 minutes), or 2.10 euro single for TEC 68 from Gare Sud to stop La Folie in Heppinges (a suburb of Charleroi, 25 mins out), from which it is approx a 20. min walk from the stop via Rue de Heppinges and a signed foot entrance into the airport.

Many thanks. I will add those. With the Mcgills option it is more expensive than the First Bus route 77 method. But still cheaper than the First Bus route 500 though.

I sm sure there used to be a through ticket from Glasgow Airport to Glasgow Central a couple years ago? It included the 757 to Paisley Gilmour Street and the train? Have they gotten rid of this ticket? I seem to remember it was less than £5.00 so very good value?

A great idea.. however the Gatwick option to use the SL6 is not going to be very useful, the last northbound departure is at 830am and it only runs on weekdays
I will remove that option. I forgot about the SL6 only operating in the peaks. Plus the Hopper Fare is now reduced from 70 minutes to 62 minutes.

I have always found the walk to Luton Airport to Luton Airport Parkway fairly easy. It takes roughly fifteen minutes. Maybe it is not good if you have multiple suitcases or in poor weather but otherwise it is fine.

Yes the three bus routes combined give a frequency of 8bph (6bph on the A plus 1bph on the 100 plus 1bph on the 757) so certainly very frequent. If you do not want to walk then this is certainly a good alternative to the DART monorail. It is very frequent and quick and cheap.

One oddity about the bus between Luton Airport and Luton Airport Parkway is that all three routes (A and 100 and 757) charge different prices despite Arriva operating all of them. Last time i checked about five years ago the A was charging £1.20 Single and £1.80 Return and the 100 was charging £1.40 Single and £2.10 Return and the 757 was charging £1.60 Single and £2.40 Return but all three buses take the same exact route. This is also the case for other journeys in Luton too. I am not sure what the current prices are.

Thank you - I know some people coming through the airport heading into London so I will point them to the bus again to get to the station. This was a very useful thread. The other option I suggested to get them to Central London is the bus all the way (Either National Express or Greenline) if time isn't critical for them.
Taking the coach to London costs £12.00 Single or £18.00 Return on both Arriva Green Line and National Express so slightly more expensive than walking and taking the train. But if you do not want to walk then this is the cheapest option. The coaches are very frequent too.

Contactless only, not contactless / Oyster (or KeyGo to most Thameslink, Southern and Great Northern stations, but not Hastings or east, Havant or west, Cambridge or north or Peterborough).
Very good and important point. I will change that. I had forgotten it was Contactless only and not Oyster on this route.

Glasgow Airport you can also take the McGills hourly 757 to Paisley Gilmour St. station for onward rail connections
Many thanks. I will add that option. That is certainly a very good option too and a fairly quick journey.

Many thanks. I forgot Prague has the rip off Airport Express bus so i will certainly add that. The bus and metro is certainly a very cheap and easy option.

It's hard to make a direct comparision, because Manchster Airport has a much wider selection of fares (including period returns and operator specific tickets) and because Manchester airport is the last station in the PTE area, but for those fares that are directly comparable Manchester airport seems substantially more expensive than Heald Green and about the same as Styal.

Bergen - for 40NOK you can catch the Bergen Light Rail line 1 which runs from the terminal to the city centre at Byparkken. This avoids the expensive Airport Express bus at the cost of approximately 10-15 minutes of a longer journey time.

@stadler - I did see your comment re Aberdeen and the 27K service, I discounted it as it’s an almost useless option unless you’re lucky enough to arrive/depart around the time of one of the few services. It does, however, give you an option of getting to Dyce Station by bus. However, I’m digressing!

I would make a distinction between separate dedicated routes, which I would call Premium Services
I would only use the word surcharge for airports like Edinburgh where you need to pay a disproportionate amount extra just to go one more stop.

I have always found the walk to Luton Airport to Luton Airport Parkway fairly easy. It takes roughly fifteen minutes. Maybe it is not good if you have multiple suitcases or in poor weather but otherwise it is fine.

15 minutes is very optimistic. Perhaps at midnight, if you walk briskly downhill from the boundary of the airport area to the Hampton hotel, that would take 15 minutes.

From getting off a train at Parkway to where you would get off a bus at the airport, uphill, crossing a busy roundabout, and on the narrow pathway along Airport Way where you have to stop every so often to let other people attempting to save £2 pass with their luggage - 25 minutes is more realistic.

Some of the other entries also have very optimistic timings which I will address later.

I think it exists, I've only used separate tickets when I went through Glesga Airport as I have a 16-25 Railcard and it works out cheaper in the off-peak and I do remember seeing rail ticket machines there.

However, it doesn't seem to be available for purchase on the ScotRail or LNER websites.

So, have the previously available combined bus/rail tickets where the origin or destination was "Glasgow Airport" now gone or been discontinued / withdrawn, leaving just "Glasgow Air XBus"?

Br fares won’t quote anything to Glasgow Airport but the Glasgow Air XBus tickets are available. It quotes Glasgow Central to Glasgow Air XBus at £5.60 single which seems incredible considering it’s £10 on the bus! Not used one of those ever although now tempted to try it if Scotrail will sell me one.

I try and avoid Luton Airport but if needs must to London I always use National Express A2 to Golders Greeen £12 single but £7.90 for over 60/ under 26/ Disabled with a £15 coachcard or Blue Light (NHS/Police) Veterans. £4.80 for HM Forces then a London zones U1 to 3 to home, because its so close to the M1 Golders Green is only 45 mins ish from Luton Airport.

For Sydney, Australia, I have walked between the international terminal and Tempe station, where normal fares apply. About a 20 minute pleasant walk.

What route did you take? Google claims the route in the image below would take 32 minutes.
I have walked to Wolli Creek station and it took about 25 minutes, I am including the time from exiting customs to reaching the train platform.

I walked from Domestic to Mascot last week and it took 25 minutes, a lot of time was taken up waiting at pedestrian crossings. At the moment there is heavy traffic throughout the day due to construction of the new access roads (which is why you can't walk between the terminals) so the OP's claimed 15 minutes would only be possible late at night and not include getting down to the platform.

I usually take bus 420 to Banksia (sometimes even Burwood) or bus 420/350 to Mascot, it costs 24 cents or $1.20 when added to a train fare, or free if I am taking buses only to my destination

Similar to that, although along Station Street and more direct at the airport end (although that bit may have changed of course) - my satnav gives it as 1.9km (and 32 minutes is on the generous side for 2.1km).

The only pedestrian crossing other than in the airport area is Station Street/Princes Highway.

Mascot's alright if you're landing at Domestic, but from International I find it easier to walk out the front, past the customs building, under the flyover then along that long, never ending bridge to Arncliffe, 20 mins walk. Almost delirious after 24 hours flying but landing many, many times at around 8am I've plenty of time to kill before hotels let you check in.

If you want to avoid a €10 return ticket on the tram from Nice airport either take a short walk or use the tram to Grand Arenas station. The walk takes 5 to 10 minutes and the tram is free within the airport zone. You can then purchase a return ticket for €3.40
